Buffs Tennis Blanked By No. 24 ASU, 7-0
March 15, 2015 | Tennis
BOULDER - It was another sunny day at the University of Colorado women's tennis complex, but the beautiful skies didn't help the No. 47 ranked Buffaloes women's tennis team end their losing streak, as they dropped their fourth straight, falling 7-0 to the No. 24 Arizona State Sun Devils, Sunday afternoon.
The loss drops CU's record to 9-6 and 0-4 in the Pac-12, and haven't won a home match since February 22, when they defeated then-No. 75 Kansas, 4-2. The win was ASU's second win of the weekend as they shutout Utah, 7-0 on Friday, and return home on an eight-match winning streak.
“Overall the results this weekend wasn't what we were looking for,” said CU coach Nicole Kenneally. “I think it's just one of those things that we need to get ourselves healthy and put the work in on the practice courts. We played two very good teams this weekend. And we just have to put ourselves in the right position, and gain control of the things that we can control, so we can get out here and fight the way that we need to.”
Playing without No. 1 and No. 2, senior Julyette Steur and freshmen Tina Bokhua for the third straight match, the Buffaloes continued to struggle in doubles play yet again dropping the point. CU hasn't won a doubles point since February 15 against then-No. 63 New Mexico.
ASU brought with them two nationally ranked doubles tandems, and the No. 75 tandem of senior Joanna Smith and sophomore Kassidy Jump, playing in the No. 2 slot, defeated the CU team of freshmen Kyra Wojcik and sophomore Nuria Ormeño Ruiz, 8-3.
ASU quickly secured the doubles point as the No. 3 team of junior Ebony Panoho and sophomore Alexandra Osborne defeated sophomore Vitaliya Alkhovik and freshmen Erin Strachan, 8-3.
ASU's No. 1 tandem of junior Desirae Krawczyk and Stephanie Vlad, nationally ranked at No. 26, didn't finish their match against Alex Aiello and Ashley Tiefel. The Buffaloes wouldn't fare much better in singles, as ASU continued its dominance winning all six in straight sets.
It was third time this season, and second time this weekend the Buffaloes failed to secure a singles point.
The scoring started quickly at the No. 4 spot as ASU senior Joanna Smith defeated Strachan in straight sets 6-0, 6-2, dropping the CU freshman's record to 1-3. Finishing just behind the No. 4 spot, ASU's Panoho, playing in the No. 6 slot, defeated Tiefel in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. It finished a tough weekend for Tiefel, who dropped both of her matches falling to 3-2 this spring.
The clinching point would come from the No. 1 slot as ASU's lone ranked singles player, Krawczyk ranked 44 nationally, defeated Ormeño Ruiz in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. Ormeño Ruiz has now played the No. 1 spot for three straight matches. Ormeño Ruiz's record drops to 9-6.
Scoring next for ASU playing the No. 2 position would be Vlad, as she handed Aiello her fourth straight loss in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. It's the only loss of the four not against a Pac-12 ranked opponent, and it drops Aiello's record for the spring to 9-5.
The No. 3 matchup was the closet of the six matches, as ASU's Jump defeated Wojcik 6-3, 7-5. Wojcik made it hard for Jump in the second set, as at one point it was tied up at four-all. But Jump would pull away for the win in the second half of the set.
The loss was Wojcik's fourth straight and it drops her record on the spring to 5-7. The final scoring came from the No. 5 slot, as ASU sophomore Gussie O'Sullivan defeated Alkhovik in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
The Buffaloes return to the court this Friday (March 20) at 1:30 p.m. welcoming the University of Washington Huskies, followed by the University of Oregon Ducks on Sunday (March 22) at 10 a.m.
