Rival Utah Visits Buffs On Wednesday

January 24, 2017 | Women's Basketball

BOULDER - Colorado's women's basketball team will host Utah on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Coors Events Center. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Mountain and Pac-12 Network. It's a battle between two rivals that joined the league together in 2011. The Buffs have had the upper hand since the two schools made the Pac-10 become the Pac-12, going 7-4 during that time against the Utes.

The similarities do not end there. Both schools have had similar seasons, getting off to hot starts in non-conference play before slipping a bit when the conference season began. Utah opened the season with an 11-game winning streak, while the Buffs began 10-0 before suffering a loss to Wyoming in the final game before Pac-12 action. Since the turn of the calendar year and conference play, Utah has defeated Southern California on the road and California at home, while the Buffs hold a Pac-12 win over Arizona at home. Colorado is 11-8 overall and Utah holds a 13-6 record on the season, but Wednesday's game is one that both teams are viewing as an opportunity to get back on track after cooling from their hot starts.

The inside game will be important for both teams and the Utes are led by 6-foot-6 forward Emily Potter. The junior from Manitoba averages 15.6 points and 8.6 rebounds. CU was plagued by strong post play from its opponents this past weekend as Oregon's Ruthy Hebard had 19 points and 11 rebounds on Friday and Oregon State's Marie Gulich had nine points and 13 rebounds on Sunday. The Buffs have capable post players as well in Zoe Correal, Zoe Beard-Fails and Bri Watts. Correal had an early-season stretch of strong interior play with two double-doubles in the month of November, but was limited to six points this past weekend. Beard-Fails has been a surprise off the bench lately, averaging 5.6 points in conference play after a scoring average of 3.3 over non-conference action. Watts scored five points on Sunday at OSU. Though a guard by trade, Haley Smith has provided the Buffs with a rebounding presence inside and she grabbed 10 on Sunday.

On the perimeter, Colorado is led by a pair of sophomores in Kennedy Leonard and Alexis Robinson. Leonard averages 18.3 points, 5.7 assists and 2.5 steals, ranking in the top four in the Pac-12 in all three categories. Robinson is coming off one of the best performances of her career when she had 18 points and five rebounds at OSU on Sunday, finishing as the only CU player to score in double figures. She has averaged 14.0 points over the past four games, up from her season average of 11.6. Utah's Malia Nawahine averages 10.7 points and Tanaeya Boclair scores at a rate of 10.2 points per game.
