Tennis Rolls in Boise, Claims Fourth Straight Victory

January 29, 2017 | Tennis

BOISE, IDAHO — The University of Colorado women's tennis team put together an impressive performance here Sunday, defeating Boise State 6-1. With the victory, it moves CU to an incredible 4-0 start to the season, just the third-time Colorado has opened a year with four straight wins in the last 20 seasons (1999, 2015, 2017). The last CU tennis squad to win five to start was in 1997 when the team started 10-0.

WHAT HAPPENED:
Clinching the doubles point gained the Buffs some confidence heading into the single rounds. The duo of Ilana Oleynic and Annabelle Andrinopoulos went to work and captured the first victory on the day, defeating Boise State's Lilian Poling and Anja Kokic 6-3. Although Brigitte Beck and Nuria Ormeño Ruiz dropped their doubles match it all came down to the No. 1 doubles team in Louise Ronaldson and Chloe Hule. They battled all the way to a tough 7-5 victory putting the Buffs out to a great 1-0 start on the day.

Nuria Ormeño Ruiz had a strong day against Boise State's Hanna Kanteinwein, who dominated her matches on Friday (6-0, 6-0). She battled for a 6-4, 6-4 victory to put the Buffs out 2-0 over the Broncos. This victory extends Ormeño's win streak to 4-0 in singles play this season.

Brigitte Beck came up short 6-3, 6-4 against Kirsty Venter at the No. 6 singles spot which put Boise State on the board 2-1. However, Ilana Oleynik pulled away with the 6-4, 6-2 victory to push the Buffs to a 3-1 lead. This victory gives Oleynik an undefeated weekend at the No. 5 spot.

Junior Louise Ronaldson clinched the victory for the Buffs in the No. 2 singles spot as she battled for the 6-4, 7-5 win over Anja Dokic of Boise State. Last weekend Ronaldson went 2-0 in the No. 3 spot and this week extended her singles streak to 4-0 overall.

Chloe Hule collected a solid 7-6, 6-4 victory over Nancy Menjivar to add to Colorado's 5-1 lead, while Annabelle Andrinopolous closed out the competition for the Buffs claiming a 6-7, 6-3 victory over Jovana Kuljanin.

NOTABLE:
  • The Buffs are now 7-4 all time over Boise State
  • Ormeño Ruiz has the team's best singles win total with an 13-4 record
QUOTABLE (CU Head Coach Nicole Kenneally):
Opening Statement
Proud of the team today, we have a group that works really well together and you can see that on the court as they are fighting out there for each other.

On what it means to get the fourth straight win to open the season:
Obviously, we are aiming high and this team is striving big.  They are a great group who is working well together and continuing to learn each day.  4-0 is a great start but we also know we have many great teams ahead of us so we are happy where we are but we are ready to continue to work hard and get better. We want to keep improving each week and learn from each experience.

On the team's confidence:
Great group of girls who are working great together...this group wants to achieve a lot and there is a lot of internal motivation so as coaches our job is made easier as they want the success for each other.

NEXT TIME:
The Buffs will head back home to host University of New Mexico on Friday, February 3rd at 2:00 p.m. (MT).
