Buffs Bounce Back With 4-0 Win Over New Mexico

February 05, 2017 | Tennis

BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's tennis team (5-1) returned home Sunday afternoon, bouncing back with a 4-0 win over the University of New Mexico (0-4) after suffering their first loss of the season the night before at Denver.

Doubles set the pace for the day as courts one and three for the Buffs came out firing, and singles never faltered. Freshman Chloe Hule clinched her second match of the season with a three set victory on court three.

The women continue home next weekend on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 3 p.m as they take on Utah State.

HOW IT HAPPENED: After losing the doubles point for the first time all season the night before, the Buffs turned it around on Sunday against the Lobos. On court one, the pairing of junior Louise Ronaldson and freshman Chloe Hule took a demanding 6-3 win to begin the day.

Down on court three, senior Nuria Ormeño Ruiz and sophomore Brigitte Beck quickly jumped out to a 4-0 start and got their first victory together as a pairing, winning 6-1 and clinched the doubles point for the Buffs.

The doubles team of Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Ilana Oleynik on court two was dominating New Mexico's Emily Oliver and Diana Wong, up 4-2 when the doubles point was decided and their match was abandoned.

Playing with the clinch-clinch format for all of the singles matches, the Buffs just needed three wins on the singles courts to get the win for the day.

Ormeno-Ruiz got one of those wins for the Buffs on court one. After the No. 77 ranked Buff suffered her first loss of the season Saturday night at Denver, she turned it around on Sunday with a demanding 6-2, 6-3 win over New Mexico's Burguiere.

"Denver was definitely a tough loss but we knew it was going to be a tough match going into it," said Ormeño Ruiz. "It's nice being able to bounce back today with a win like this, definitely makes you feel better."

On court two, Ronaldson took care of business against the Lobo senior, Dominique Dulski with the 6-3, 6-1 win to put the Buffs up 3-0.

It came down to court three, with freshman Hule battling New Mexico's Ruth Copas. After winning the first set 6-3, Copas came back, making Hule play and her consistency is what led her to claim the second set 6-4.

The third set was a battle for Hule. Copas got up with a quick break at 1-0, but Hule fought her way back to put her up 2-1. She was never down a break the remainder of the match, winning 6-3 in the third and clinching the match for the Buffs.

Courts four and five were abandoned due to the clinch-clinch format. Andrinopoulos was down a set, 6-4 and 2-1 on court four and Olynek was down a set as well, 6-3 on court five.

TURNING POINT: Up 3-0 the match was decided on court three, with freshman Chloe Hule getting her opportunity in the third set to close out the day and to give the Buffs the fourth point needed in the decisive 4-0 win.

CU STANDOUTS: True freshman Chloe Hule is off to a great start as a Buffalo, winning her fifth match of the season. Senior Nuria Ormeño Ruiz leads the team with 14 wins in singles.

WHAT IT MEANS: After their first loss of the season to rival Denver on Saturday night, the Buffs proved that they can bounce back quickly with the 4-0 win over New Mexico.

NOTEWORTHY: After both the singles and doubles wins today, Ormeño Ruiz moved up in the CU record books. She now is No. 11 in all-time single wins (75-51), No. 20 in all-time doubles wins (53-45) and is No. 16 in combined singles and doubles wins (128).

QUOTEWORTHY: "It's fantastic. She played with all her heart today. Might not have played her best tennis at times but she was in there the whole way and emotionally she may have had a bit of a rollercoaster but ultimately she played with maturity and didn't show her opponent any frustration." Head Coach Nicole Kenneally said on Hules second clinching match

NEXT UP: Buffs continue their homestead next weekend as they face Utah State next Saturday, Feb. 11 at 3 p.m. The match is schedule to be played at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center.
