Buffs Battle, Top Boise State 4-3

February 11, 2018 | Tennis

BOULDER – The University of Colorado tennis team put together a very strong performance here Sunday, defeating Boise State 4-3. After CU dropped the doubles point, the Buffs went on a 4-0 singles run to clinch the match victory.

With the victory, it moves CU to a 5-0 start, just the fourth-time Colorado has opened a year with four straight wins in the last 20 seasons.

WHAT HAPPENED: DOUBLES
The Buffs went down early in the match 0-1 after dropping the doubles point. Chloe Hule and Brigitte Beck sailed through their doubles match in the No. 2 spot winning 6-3 over Boise State's Dokic and Nosek. The No. 1 doubles team of Louise Ronaldson and Jeannez Daniel battled but fell 6-3 to Poling and Palmer of Boise State. It came down to the No. 3 doubles lineup of Linda Huang and Kyra Wojcik but CU fell 7-5 to Timm and Menjiver to give Boise State the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead over the Buffs.

SINGLES
The Buffs had to battle back from going down one point after doubles and they did just that. CU went on a 4-0 run to clinch the match victory.

Linda Huang played No. 1 singles and took the victory over Dokic of Boise State. Huang cruised through the first set with a 6-2 victory and hung tough to take the 7-5 second set and match win. Huang's victory tied up the score 1-1.

Chloe Hule clinched the No. 2 singles match taking the 7-6, 6-2 victory over Poling to put the Buffs up on the scoreboard 2-1.

Louise Ronaldson played a marathon match against Palmer of Boise State. Ronaldson went down early in the first set but battled back to get the 7-6 set win. Although she fell in the second set 6-3, Ronaldson didn't let it slow her down and battled to a 6-6 tie breaker in the third set. Ronaldson then won the tie-breaker 6-0 to clinch the match in a 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 victory.

Jeannez Daniel clinched the match for the Buffs with the 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Boise State's Kantenwein. This marks Daniel's fourth career singles cinching win as she had three in 2016 and one in 2017. Brigitte Beck fell in the No. 5 singles spot in a three-set match against Nosek. Beck fell 3-6, 7-5, 6-7.

QUOTABLE (Head Coach Nicole Kenneally)
"I just told them. All weekend we had nine positions show up. Both today and yesterday we had nine positions show up. We didn't necessarily play our best tennis but, we competed and we competed all weekend, and that is what you need to have. You are not always going to play your best tennis, but you have got to have that mojo to keep getting out there and competing like both Linda and Nez [Jeannez] did."

"We had some phenomenal efforts today. For Nez [Jeannez] and Lou to both come back and win those matches was huge. It's tough sometimes when you know the match is over to keep going, but we need to do that."

"We definitely came out and competed this whole weekend. In regards to on court performance, I could not have asked for a better performance. They gave everything they had with everything they felt they had this weekend and that is all you can ask."

UP NEXT
The Buffs will be back in action next Sunday as they take on Kansas State at 11:00 on February 18th.
