Colorado Splits against Cornell and Binghamton

ITHACA, N.Y. – The University of Colorado concluded the weekend in New York with a close 4-3 loss to Cornell and a 4-2 defeat of Binghamton, Sunday morning at the University of Cornell.

The Buffaloes (5-5) opened the day with the close loss to Cornell (3-6), but rallied back to defeat Binghamton (0-9) despite being down a player and having to forfeit a singles match.

Colorado entered singles play against Binghamton down two team points after Tiffany Dun and Samara Eisenberg defeated Monica Malinen and Tallulah Farrow 6-4 to take the doubles team point. Sara Nayar and Megan Forster defeated Michelle Eisenberg and Maria Pandya by a score of 6-1, but the doubles team point was decided in the No. 1 doubles match.

After being down the Buffaloes went on a run to take the match back with ease. From top-to-bottom, Colorado took every set in the No.1 to No.5 singles matches. Nayar picked up her first victory at the No.1 singles position by a 6-3, 6-2 defeated of S. Eisenberg. Forster and Farrow each won the No.3 and No.4 singles matches, respectfully, by set scores of 6-0, 6-2 in Forster's match and the reverse in Farrows.

Ky Ecton picked up a win in the No.5 singles match by defeating Ashley Granieri 6-1, 6-1, and Malinen was up on Michelle Eisenberg 7-5, 2-2 before the dual was clinched by CU and the match was abandoned.

In the earlier match against Cornell, Colorado was once again down early without senior Annabelle Andrinopoulos. After Ecton and Nayar defeated Ana Elhom and Katherine Nguyen in the No.2 doubles match by a score of 6-2, the team doubles point rested in the outcome of the No.1 doubles match. Farrow and Malinen fought hard but fell in a tiebreaker with Maria Adiaconitei and Sarah Campbell clinching the team double point by a set score of 7-6(5).

Moving into the singles matches with a 2-0 lead, Cornell jumped to a huge gap after Campbell defeated Ecton in the No.5 singles match by consecutive set scores of 6-2 to give Cornell a 3-0 lead. Nayar scored the first team point for CU in the No.1 singles match, defeating Nguyen 7-5, 6-1.

Malinen was next, picked up a win in the No.2 singles match against Mariko Iinuma by a score of 7-5, 6-1. The Buffs tied up the match at three all when Forster defeated Adiaconitei in the No.3 singles match 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

The match came down to the No.4 singles match where Farrow was up early against Valerie Ho. Farrow won the opening set 7-5, then Ho went on a run with consecutive 6-1 sets to secure the match and the dual for Cornell.

Colorado returns to action next weekend in Boise, Idaho, with a match against South Dakota Saturday and Boise State on Sunday. The Buffs return home on Friday, March 8, when they take on Washington at 2:30 p.m.
