Ava Priest and Shyra James shine in the win
ALBUQUERQUE— Colorado extended its win streak to five in its first road test of the season on Thursday night. The Buffaloes went down to New Mexico and snapped the Lobos' 10-game home-unbeaten streak with a 2-0 result.
Â
The win for Colorado was its first on the road since beating Arizona 1-0 in Tucson on Oct. 31, 2021.
Â
Freshman Ava Priest opened her account on Thursday, scoring her first goal as a Buffs. Shyra James, no stranger to scoring goals, picked up her 30th career tally and provided a bit of insurance for Colorado in the second half.
Â
"It was a great start for us tonight," head coach Danny Sanchez explained after the win. "We got that early goal from Ava, but sometimes you score early and relax. I thought that after we got the goal we didn't push for the second goal. New Mexico had such a long streak [at home]. They're a tough team to break down. We started the second half a bit slow, but got a great finish from Shyra that really kind of took the pressure off."
Â
The Buffaloes continued to look for chances offensively on the night. CU recorded its second-highest shot total of the season, getting off 23 shots on the night. The Buffs landed 11 shots on target and held UNM to just four shots on goal.
Â
Sophomore Jordan Nytes made four saves, all in the first half, to record her fifth shutout of the season. Â
How it happened
The Buffs got on the board on their first shot of the game. Juliauna Hayward got taken down just outside of the penalty area, leading to an early free-kick chance. Priest stepped to the ball and put it right through the hands of Lobo keeper Alli Davis for her first career goal.
Â
The Buffs had a handful of chances to get back on the board in the first half, getting three more shots on goal in the half. Emerson Layne had a shot on target from distance in the 11th minute. Hayward and Grace Thao also put attempts on net in the half.
Â
James had a chance right to put the Buffs up 2-0 right after the whistle to start the second half. She put a ball wide left of the UNM net in the 47th minute but that would be the extent of the chance for CU in the early portion of the closing half.
Â
The Buffs didn't concede a shot on net in the second half, despite the continued pressure by the Lobos. Sariah Brady had the biggest opportunity for New Mexico, beating Nytes on a shot in the 52nd minute. Her left-footed chance from distance floated over Nytes' outstretched arm and hit the crossbar. Â
Â
"The second half they [UNM] kept putting us under pressure, but we were keeping our shape and keeping shots from distance and not on frame," Sanchez added. "It was a good job from the back four and we had some injuries and the players that stepped into the back really performed well to limit the opportunities."
Â
Colorado added to the scoreboard in the 59th minute, giving the team a bit of breathing room for the remainder of the night. Sophomore Greer Maguire cleared a ball out of the defensive zone and James was able to run it down, splitting two UNM defenders to win the race and beat the charging Lobo goalkeeper from 17 yards out.
Â
"They [UNM] were throwing a lot of numbers forward which led to Shyra being able to catch them on the counterattack," Sanchez explained. "It was a great ball from Greer and really good composure from Shyra to smash that in."
Â
Layne almost made it a 3-0 game in the 73rd minute, finding the ball on the doorstep on a rebound. Her shot was kept out of the by a cluster of UNM defenders on the goal line. Â
Upcoming
Colorado returns home for its Alumni Day against Colgate at Noon. The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
Quotes
Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On finishing the weekend at home:Â "It's an early wake-up call tomorrow and we'll be home in time to go to class, which is good. It's not a lot of recovery time and there's not a lot of prep time for Colgate. We need to be professional in our approach and how we carry ourselves over the next 48 hours."
