Buffs Win Ninth Straight Match, Down Northern Arizona

February 23, 2024 | Tennis

BOULDER – The No. 65 Colorado Buffaloes tennis team added another win to the ledger with a 6-1 defeat of Northern Arizona Friday night at the Meadows Club. The win continues to add to the historic start to the season, with the Buffs 10-1 record matching the best 11-match start since 1997.

Playing in the only match at the Meadows Club this season, Colorado quickly gave the standing-room-only crowd something to cheer about in doubles against Northern Arizona (1-3). The duos of Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson along with Mila Stanojevic and Elys Ventura swept the doubles points and moved the match to singles.

On the same two courts as doubles two new Buffaloes took the court, and Alexandra Abyasova and Betina Tokac cruised in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 4 singles respectively to put the Buffs up 3-0 and one match away from clinching.

After Northern Arizona got its first win of the night to give them a little life, Aya El Sayed put the stamp on the match. After dropping the second set, El Sayed found herself down 2-1 at the start of the third but would go on to break her opponent winning the final five games to clinch the match.

"I'm proud of our performance tonight," head coach Anthony Pham said on the night. "The fans always do a good job here at Meadows of showing up.  Credit to Northern Arizona for battling.  You always want the match to be straightforward, but it's good to see your team push through some tight moments.  Mila was down and came back.
All those moments help build confidence and will benefit us moving forward."

With the match being played out Pia Rebec and Mila Stanojevic tacked on two more wins to close out the night in style.

For the Buffs, when the lineup used on Friday night, the Buffs are undefeated at No. 3, 4, 5, and 6 singles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buablo and Nelson got the night going with a dominating 6-1 win over Neyestani and Tumthong at No. 3 doubles. The duo opened the match winning the first five games before closing in out in the seventh game of the match.
  • After going down 2-1 early to Niewiadomska Duhl, Stanojevic and Ventura would finish the match on a 5-2 run to clinch the doubles point, and give Colorado an early 1-0 lead.
  • With the doubles point clinched El Sayed and Rebec would fall one game short of clinching their match, finishing the match unfinished with a score of 5-3 against Guadiana Campos and Shoshyna.
  • Abyasova kept the momentum going having no problems against Ava Neyestani at No. 5 singles. She controlled the match from start to finish closing the match with a score of 6-0, 6-1.
  • Much like Abyasova, Tokac had no issues at No. 4 singles taking care of business in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 over Dolavee Tumthong.
  • Ana Karen Guadiana Campos had the only win of the night for NAU at No. 2 singles over Ventura. Despite the loss Ventura battled, forcing tiebreakers in both sets but ultimately fell 7-6(3), 7-6(4).
  • With the match starting to roll in NAU's favor, El Sayed found herself in the third set after splitting the first two sets 6-4, 4-6, and struggling to pull away. After a slow start, El Sayed ran the table winning five straight to clinch not only her match but the match as a whole.
"I was struggling a little in the second set to get any momentum," El Sayed said on the match. "I got it to 5-4, 30-love and I was waiting for it to click and be comfortable. You can't complain when you have the momentum, you have the confidence, and you just go.  It worked out, so I'm happy."
  • In the other three-set match, Stanojevic pulled away in the end over Daryna Shoshyna 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to add on another point for the Buffs putting the score at 5-1.
  • In the final match of the night at No. 6 singles, Rebec had complete command on the court winning 6-2, 6-1 over Andrea Noguera.
NOTES
  •  Colorado moves to 10-1, the best 11-match start since 1997.
  • With the win, Colorado moves to 7-0 all-time against Northern Arizona.
  • Aya El Sayed won her 99th career match including doubles and singles.
  • Mila Stanojevic moves to 9-0 on the season at No. 3 singles.
  • Betina Tokac moves to 7-0 at No. 4 singles.
  • Alexandra Abyasova moves to 4-0 at No. 5 singles.
  • Pia Rebec moves to 4-0 at No. 6 singles.
Up Next
The Buffs head to Fort Collins to take on in-state rival Colorado State on Sunday at Noon. The Buffs will look to close out non-conference play with the best start in program history.
"CSU will also be a good match for us, it's our last non-conference match," El Sayed said on playing Colorado State. "It's going to be a good match; we're already looking forward to it."
