Buffs Set for Two Match Weekend
February 22, 2024 | Tennis
BOULDER – The No. 65 ranked Colorado Buffaloes tennis team returns home for one match against Northern Arizona on Friday at 6:00 p.m. before heading back on the road for a quick trip to face off against in-state rival Colorado State on Sunday at Noon.
For the first time this season, the Buffs joined the ITA Rankings, coming in at No. 65 after the rankings expanded from the top 25 that ITA lists for the fall and beginning portion of the spring season. This is the second consecutive season being ranked in by ITA after being ranked seven times a year ago including the final six weeks. The last time Colorado was ranked two seasons in a row was the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
"It's nice for the team to be recognized, but we know there's still a ton of work still to be done," head coach Anthony Pham said on being ranked No. 65. "We're just under the halfway point of the season and we are about to get into the challenging part of our schedule, but I think the ladies are eager to have two good opportunities this weekend in Northern Arizona at home and Colorado State on the road. They know the first ranking doesn't mean anything. What's more important is what we do now and hopefully, we can keep moving up from here."
The Buffs are coming in off of a 3-0 weekend in Indiana where they won by a combined score of 12-2 across the three matches. The weekend gave them a 9-1 start to the season and the best start since going 10-0 in 1997.
Looking forward to this weekend, the Buffs begin at home on Friday against Northern Arizona (1-2) at the Meadows Club. This is only the third match played at the facility after having two matches a year ago against BYU and Indiana.
"We always appreciate the opportunity to play at the Meadows Club," Pham commented on Friday's match. "They've got a great fan base, the members are always very friendly and very welcoming. They always have really good crowds, last year when we played there, we averaged over 200 people for the matches. I know the team is excited to play there and in front of a good Colorado crowd."
This will only be the seventh time taking the court against Northern Arizona with Colorado holding winning all six previous match-ups including playing in a late season match a year ago in Flagstaff Ariz. where the Buffs won 4-1.
Following the match on Friday, the team will take a quick trip up to Fort Collins to play Colorado State (3-3) in a match for the first time since 2022. The last time the two played the Buffs lost for the first time to the Rams in school history after winning the first 40 match-ups.
Colorado will look to close out its non-conference with strong heading into a tough final Pac-12 schedule. All but one of the Pac-12 opponents were ranked in the top 52 teams in the country, setting up a difficult stretch going forward.
"We just have to keep building and keep getting better," Pham said on closing out non-conference. "The hope is we can take some good positive momentum going into Pac-12 play, but we know both Northern Arizona and Colorado State will be tough challenges. We all have to keep getting better, there are some things we still have to clean up. We want to keep building and getting better."
Make sure to get to the match early on Friday, and be entered for a chance to win a set of CU pickle ball paddles. Remember to follow along on our team's Instagram and X accounts @cubuffstennis never miss a moment this season.
