Colorado defeats No. 12 Kansas State in Boulder

BOULDER – The 2024-25 season marks Colorado's return to the Big 12 Conference and a renewal of traditional and historic rivalries.

As part of the celebration of Colorado women's basketball's 50th anniversary season, CUBuffs.com will look back at historic matchups.

The Game: Colorado vs Kansas State, Feb. 23, 2002

The No. 11 Buffaloes were set for a rematch against No. 12 Kansas State, having lost in a closely contested 75-72 result earlier in the season in Manhattan. The second matchup came on Colorado's Senior Day in front of one of the largest home crowds in the last four years.

BOULDER In Colorado's final home game of the regular season Saturday night, CU honored the 11th-ranked Buffs' senior class in pregame and postgame ceremonies.

But the seniors honored themselves with a critical 79-58 thumping of No. 12 Kansas State in front of a season-high 8,282—the largest home crowd to ever watch a game played by this senior class.

"It was our senior night and there was no way we were going to lose that game," senior Mandy Nightingale said. "You get a crowd like that and we're going to play our best."

Three of the four starting seniors scored in double digits, but the play of Jenny Roulier and CU's team defense couldn't be beat.

Roulier's hustle on defense earned her a career-high six steals, which set up her offense for a game-high 25 points—the second-most she's scored this season.

"I'm an emotional player," Rouiler said. "If there's a big crowd and a lot going on, I feed off of that. I feel like my defense was really what started everything. I was rushing things early on."

Colorado (20-8 overall, 10-5 Big 12) played what coach Ceal Barry said was the Buffs' best defense of the year.

In holding Kansas State (21-5, 9-5) to four field goals in the first half on 15.4 percent shooting, the Buffs held the Wildcats' three leading scorers, who were averaging more than 16 points per game, to a combined nine points in the first 20 minutes.

Overall, Colorado came up with 14 steals and Kansas State turned the ball over 22 times. The Wildcats entered the game averaging 76.6 points per game, as well.

Offensively, Colorado worked its triangle offense to a "T" as the Buffs built a 40-12 halftime advantage. Colorado's 10-0 run to start the game was its best effort out of the game this year.

"Our defense in the first half took them out of anything they wanted to do," Barry said. "We felt that if we pressured them, we'd take them out of their triangle offense. Pretty much we won the game in the first half."

Senior Eisha Bohman scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half and senior Britt Hartshorn added 10 points. Nightingale had six points and reserve senior Virginie Delepine played the last 2:41 of the game, grabbing one rebound.

The Wildcats' leading scorers rebounded in the second half as Laurie Koehn finished with 23 points, Kendra Wecker added 14 and Nicole Ohlde had 10.

With the win, CU Tied Kansas State for third place in the Big 12, but the Buffs own the tiebreaker. A Buff win at Nebraska Tuesday – their final game of the regular season – would ensure Colorado finishes in at least third place and possibly second place. Either one would be good for a first-round bye in the Big 12 Tournament.

Barry, who earned her 11th 20-win season in 19 years (15th overall at CU), hopes wins like this will help her team's chances of hosting the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

It didn't hurt that it was senior night.

"I think that's a big emotional lift," Barry said. "We saw it (Feb. 20) at Baylor – we've been there and our seniors have been on other people's court for senior night. There was so much we were playing for, plus we have five seniors."

Colorado (12-6, 3-4 Big 12) looks to have similar success against No. 10 Kansas State (19-1, 7-0 Big 12) on Saturday (Jan. 25, 1 p.m. MT) at the CU Events Center.

Saturday will be the 70th meeting between the two programs. The Wildcats have a one-game advantage in the series, leading 35-34. The Buffs took the most recent meeting, a second-round NCAA Tournament victory (63-50) last season in Manhattan.

CU is 16-13 overall against KSU in Boulder.

Thad Anderson and former Buff Kami Carmann Snyder will have Saturday's call on ESPN+ at 1 p.m. MT.

Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have pregame coverage starting 30 minutes before tip-off on the Colorado Radio Network.

Saturday is Colorado's annual Play4Kay game. The team will don pink accessories and honor Cancer warriors, thrivers and survivors throughout the day.
