CU heads home with two games to go in the regular season

STILLWATER, Okla. – Colorado's road woes continued on Saturday inside Gallagher-Iba Arena as the Buffaloes fell to No. 24 Oklahoma State 82-65.

The Buffs drop to 17-10 on the season and 8-8 in Big 12 play. Colorado is just 1-7 on the road inside conference play this season and 3-8 on the road overall.

Outside of the second quarter, the Buffs kept it to a four-point game. OSU doubled the Buffs, 26-13, in the quarter, scoring 13 points off of seven CU turnovers. CU's turnovers proved costly throughout the game, as the Buffs coughed the ball up 21 times, leading to 27 points off turnovers for the Cowgirls.

"I think they dialed up the pressure, and I think we got a little frazzled," head coach JR Payne commented. "We'd have to go back and watch it to figure out what we could have done differently. I thought it was a combination of their pressure and us not being as composed as we needed to be."

Ayianna Johnson led the Buffs with 20 points off the bench, matching her career-high. She finished 7-for-9 from the field and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line. Jade Masogayo poured in 14 points with five rebounds in just 12 minutes.

"She was great," Payne added about Johnson. "She was being really aggressive inside and her teammates did a good job of finding her and feeding the hot hand. She made almost all her free throws; I thought she played really well."

Kindyll Wetta made her return to the lineup, having missed the last three games. She closed the day with four points and a game-high seven assists.

"It's great [having Kindyll back]," Payne added. "Kindyll has been with the program for a long time. [She's] a senior point guard that's played hard every minute of her career. I think it's great for her to be back. I always want players to go out on their own terms. I'm really happy that she was able to come back and finish her career the way she started."

The two teams traded runs in the opening 10 minutes, with Colorado using a 7-0 effort in an 11-2 run to claim a 19-13 lead inside the final two minutes of the quarter. Oklahoma State countered with a 7-0 run to close the period, taking a 20-19 lead. The Buffs hit 52.9% (9-17) in the opening frame, and Masogayo scored all nine of her first-half points quarter, but OSU scored 8-for-10 from the free-throw line and 3-for-6 from long range.

Grace Oliver started the second quarter with a 3-pointer to tie the game at 22. The Buffs would get 10 straight points from Johnson the remainder of the quarter. She went 4-for-4 from the floor and 2-for-3 from the line to carry the CU offense into the half. The Cowgirls went 61.1% from the field (11-18) from the field in the quarter, taking the 14-point advantage at the break.

Lior Garzon and Wetta combined for the first five points to start the third quarter, and CU twice cut the Cowgirl lead down to eight, with the last off a Johnson jumper with 5:03 to play. The Buffs kept pace with OSU in the quarter, hitting 46.8% (8-17) to OSU's 50.0% (6-12), but the home team outscored the Buffs 14-7 in the final five minutes to maintain a double-digit lead going into the final quarter, 67-52.

OSU's lead hit 19 in the fourth quarter, proving too large for the Buffs to erase.

The Cowgirls had three players in double figures, with Stailee Heard leading the way with a game-high 26 points and seven rebounds.

CU still possesses the eighth seed in the upcoming Big 12 Tournament with two games left.
