Six seniors to play final regular-season home game
BOULDER – The Colorado women's basketball team is set to host Arizona State in its regular-season home finale on Wednesday. The Buffaloes will send off its six seniors in a ceremony following the game's conclusion.
Johanna Teder, Nyamer Diew, Lior Garzon, Sara-Rose Smith, Kindyll Wetta and Frida Formann will all participate in Senior Day.
Teder, a graduate transfer, landed in Boulder this season after spending three seasons at Washington State. The Tartu, Estonia, native has started 12 games this season and played in all 27 after missing the 2023-24 season for WSU. Teder was a three-time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll selection and a 2023 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honoree. Teder has scored 860 career points and made 98 starts in 113 career games.
Diew, a graduate transfer, came to Colorado after earning her undergraduate degree at Iowa State. She is a four-time Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll selection and was First Team Academic All-Big 12 in 2023. The Marshall, Minn., native is averaging a career-high 7.5 points per game this season and posted a season-high 22 points in the Buffs' win over BYU.
Garzon, a grad transfer who came to CU this season after earning her undergraduate degree at Oklahoma State. Garzon was named the 2022 Co-Big East Most Improved Player and was Second Team All-Big East before moving to Stillwater. She left OSU ranked fifth in program history with 140 career 3-point field goals. Garzon, the first Israeli student-athlete at CU, has started 21 of the 26 games she's played this season and is third on the team with 10.2 points per game. She surpassed 1,500 career points at Iowa State and is 17th among active DI players with 284 career 3-pointers.
Smith, a Missouri transfer, is finishing her second year in Boulder. She made six starts in 75 games in her three seasons and was a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection at Mizzou. She averaged 3.7 points and 4.0 rebounds in 30 games last season, helping the Buffs reach the Sweet 16 for the team's second straight season. Smith has started 20 of the 23 games she's played this season, posting a career-high 21 points at Utah Tech. Smith is averaging 6.1 rebounds per game this season and snagged a career-high 19 boards in the Buffs' win over Kansas.
Wetta, a Colorado native and a four-year Buffs, stepped into a starting role in her final season in Boulder. She broke onto the scene in the 2021-22 season, earning Pac-12 All-Freshman honors, and was the first true freshman selected to the Pac-12 All-Defensive team in conference history. Wetta played in all 34 games as a sophomore and hit the game-winning 3-pointer in CU's overtime win over No. 8 UCLA. Wetta scored a career-high 16 points in CU's opening-round win over Drake in last season's NCAA Tournament. She started all 22 games she's played this season, averaging 5.7 points and ranks 25th in the NCAA with a career-high 5.5 assists per game. Wetta has twice handed out a career-high 10 assists this season and ranks 10th in the conference with 120 total helpers. Wetta has also been stellar in the classroom, earning CSC Academic All-District in 2023 and 2024, and is a three-time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll selection.
Formann returned to the Buffaloes for her fifth and final season in 2024-25. Entering Wednesday, she has played the third most games in program history and has the fifth most starts in a CU uniform. She was a 2021 Pac-12 All-Freshman selection and earned conference and national Player of the Week honors after hitting the go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime of CU's upset win over No. 1 and eventual national champion Stanford. She helped guide the Buffs to three NCAA Tournaments and became just the third Buff to hit at least five 3-pointers in an NCAA Tournament game, going 5-for-8 in CU's 2023 first-round win over Middle Tennessee. Formann has averaged 10.9 points and made 13 3-pointers in seven career NCAA Tournament games, highlighted by her 21-point performance in the 2023 Sweet 16 against Iowa. Formann set the CU record for most 3-pointers in a season with 82 last year. She also became Colorado's career 3-point leader, men or women, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season and continued to add to the record this year, ranking 13th among active DI players with precisely 300 career 3-pointers. Formann notched a career-high 27 points in last season's opening win over No. 1 LSU and matched it again at Washington State last February. The sharp-shooter from Denmark twice tied the CU single-game record for 3's in a game last season, hitting seven against LSU and UT Arlington. She is averaging a career-high 13.3 points per game this season and went over 1,500 career points at West Virginia this season. She now sits 13th in program history with 1,583 career points. Formann has two All-Pac-12 honorable mentions and is a three-time Pac-12 honor roll selection. She was also a Third Team CSC Academic All-American.
Colorado (17-10, 8-8 Big 12) sits tied for eighth in the Big 12 standings with just two games left in the regular season. CU holds the head-to-head tiebreaker against Arizona, claiming the final first-round bye in next week's Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City.
Arizona State (9-19, 3-13 Big 12) snapped a 12-game losing streak last time out with an 85-73 overtime win at BYU. It marked the team's first win since Jan. 4 at Houston.
Wednesday's game will be the first meeting between the Buffs and Sun Devils in Boulder since the 2019-20 season. The two teams were scheduled to play at the CU Events Center in the 2022-23 season, but Arizona State was forced to forfeit the contest due to not having enough available players to compete.
Colorado is 14-16 all-time against ASU but has won the last two contests (forfeit not included) and is 7-7 all-time in Boulder.
