Buffs Set For Final Two Home Matches

BOULDER – Colorado is set to finish the regular season at home against No. 30-ranked Arizona on Friday and No. 33-ranked Arizona State on Sunday for Senior Day. The Buffaloes will honor its three seniors in a ceremony before the match against the Sun Devils.

Colorado will honor Aya El Sayed, Mila Stanojevic, and Betina Tokac for their impact on the program over the last four seasons.

"It's tough that our spring season is coming to an end, and the careers of three very special seniors for us also are coming to an end for Aya [El Sayed], Betina [Tokac], and Mila [Stanojevic]," head coach Anthony Pham said. "Aya [El Sayed] has been here for three years, Betina [Tokac] and Mila [Stanojevic] have been here for four years, and they've been great representatives for our program on the court and in the classroom. We want to do our best to give them a great ending in Boulder."

El Sayed came to Colorado after spending her first three collegiate seasons at NJIT, but she only competed in one full season due to a shortened season in 2020 and her team opting out in 2021 due to COVID-19. Since arriving in Boulder, she has made a big impact, playing at the top of the lineup in either doubles or singles most of her career. Despite missing the back half of this season due to injury, she has accumulated 50 singles wins and 86 total wins. She is just the 39th player to reach 50 singles wins at Colorado.

She has put together some of the top moments over the last few seasons. Some include taking down the defending national champion in 2024, being ranked No. 8 with partner Pia Rebec in the preseason polls this season, and two different all-conference honors, including second team All-Pac-12 in 2024 and All Pac-12 Honorable Mention in 2023.

"She's been rock solid," Pham said. "She's such a pleasant person. She works hard; I think she's always happy and smiling. If you talk to anyone who comes into contact with her, they always mention how much of a nice person she is. She transferred here and has really flourished in our program. We feel very fortunate she chose to come to Colorado when she had many other options, and we'll miss her dearly."

Tokac arrived in Boulder in 2020. Throughout her career, she has played at all six singles positions. She has won 52 singles matches and 81 overall matches. She continues to move up the CU career charts. Her 52 singles wins are the 32nd most in program history. This season, she has the second most singles wins with 14. She started the spring on a seven-match win streak. After her sophomore season, Tokac was named to the All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention in 2023.

"She's grown a lot," Pham commented. "She's one of the most ferocious competitors I've ever had the pleasure to coach. She wants to win so badly all the time and leaves it out on the court every time. She plays with a lot of emotion and always wears her emotions on her sleeve. I'm proud of her and her growth and maturation over the last four years."

Stanojevic, the first recruit Pham contacted after becoming the head coach, has put her name in the Colorado record books. After four seasons, she has 57 singles wins, 62 doubles wins, and 129 overall wins. With more matches, she will continue to rise in the all-time ranks. Currently, she ranks 22nd in singles wins, 11th in doubles wins, and 15th in total wins in CU history.

She is set to lead the team in singles wins for the third time in her career after leading the team at the top spot for most of the season. Last year, she won the ITA Mountain Region Arthur Ash Leadership and Sportsmanship Award and was named an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention.

"Her freshman year, she played four or five singles and won a lot," Pham said. "She has developed into someone playing at the top of our lineup, in both singles and doubles. Mila is a good competitor and a really good team player. She will play wherever we need her to because she wants to win so badly for the team; she always puts the team above herself. I'm really glad she picked Colorado. She's grown, matured, and developed; she's our leader this year."

Colorado (8-11, 2-9 Big 12) is in 12th place in the Big 12 standings with just two matches left in the regular season. The Buffs will start against Arizona on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the CU South Tennis Courts. The Wildcats come into the match 17-8, 7-4 in the Big 12, which is in 5th place in the standings.

The Buffs will return to the courts for Senior Day against Arizona State on Sunday. The Sun Devils are 12-7 and 7-4 in the Big 12. The senior ceremony will begin at 11:40 p.m., with the match to begin at noon, starting with doubles.
