Buffs' Big 12 Championship Run Comes to an End Against Arizona State

April 17, 2025 | Tennis

WACO, Texas – Colorado's run in the Big 12 Championship ended in the second round against sixth-seeded and No. 35-ranked Arizona State, falling 4-1 Thursday at the Hurd Tennis Center.

The Buffaloes finish the season winning at least nine matches for the third year in a row, finishing 9-14, and winning a conference tournament game for just the third time since 2010.

"Tough result for our team today, but again, just extremely proud of the way we competed, just like we have this entire year," head coach Anthony Pham said. "Losing both Rixt [Van der Werff] and Aya [El Sayed] to injuries in the middle of the season hurt a lot, but this team never made excuses.  This group has a lot to be proud of. They always represented our University in a first-class manner."

Senior Mila Stanojevic finished her career with another ranked singles win, this time over No. 46 Sara Svetac.  For the second time against Arizona State (13-8) in the last week,

Stanojevic took down both of their ranked singles players in straight sets. These two wins were the highest-ranked wins of her career.
Stanojevic finishes her career with 70 singles wins, tied for 18th in CU history, 63 doubles wins, which is 11th all-time, and 133 total wins, putting her 14th in Colorado history.

"To Mila, Aya, and Betina [Tokac], a huge debt of gratitude for choosing to be Buffs, Pham said. "They have set a strong foundation for the continued success of this program. They left a lasting impact, and we miss all 3 dearly."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles started slow again for the Buffs with Lera Alexin and Stanojevic falling to Karin Altori and Svetac 6-3 at the No. 2 spot.

Arizona State quickly wrapped up the doubles point with another 6-3 win. This time it was Aiya Nupbay and Emilija Tverijonaite at No. 3 doubles over Pia Rebec and Betina Tokac.

The top spot was left unfinished between Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson against the 60th-ranked pair, Patricija Spaka and Lily Taylor. The Sun Devil duo led 5-4 when the doubles point was completed.

Moving to singles, Stanojevic continued her success of the last few matches against No. 46 Svetac. She controlled the court throughout the match, winning the first set 6-3 and dominating the second set with a 6-1 victory. This tied the match 1-1 early in singles.

Arizona State retook the lead with a 6-1, 6-3 win by No. 75-ranked Tverijonaite over Tokac.

At No. 4 singles, Rebec took an early lead against Taylor and was tied 4-4 as the first set drew to a close. Taylor responded, winning eight straight games to win 6-4, 6-0 and give the Sun Devils a 3-1 lead.

The match closed with Buablo against Spaka at No. 3 singles. After Spaka took the first set 6-3, Bubalo fought to force a third set. She led for much of the first part of the set, but with the score tied 4-4, Spaka closed it out, winning the set and clinching the match 6-4.

Alexin's match against Nupbay was left unfinished in the third set, trailing 6-2, 1-6, 0-3 at No. 5 singles.

No. 6 singles between Nelson Karsyn Evans and had just begun the second set after a back-and-forth first set. After Evans took a 5-2 lead, Nelson rattled off three games to tie the set 5-5. Evans responded with two games to take the first set 7-5. The pair was tied 1-1 early in the second set when the match was clinched.
