CU Athletics to Honor Coach Bill McCartney with a Statue Outside Folsom Field

A memorial scholarship endowment will also be created in tribute to CU’s winningest football coach.
In tribute to former Coach Bill McCartney, whose larger-than-life legacy has had a far-reaching impact on the University of Colorado Boulder and beyond, CU Athletics will erect a statue commemorating the Hall of Fame football coach outside Folsom Field. The statue will stand along the Buff Walk on the east side of the stadium and will be unveiled before a home football game this fall to be determined.  Â
A project two full years in the making, the statue will stand 8.5 feet tall in total and consist of a bronze statue on a granite base. It is designed by Brian Hanlon of Hanlon Sculpture Studios, who also designed the statue of Ralphie and her handlers that stands outside the UC Health Champions Center. It'll be just the second statue outside Folsom Field in its 101-year history, joining a bust of the stadium's namesake, Fred Folsom, which adorns the stadium's south side.
In addition to a statue, a scholarship endowment in Coach McCartney's name will also be established, providing support to generations of future CU students. An educator at heart, the scholarship is tribute to Coach Mac's commitment for shaping lives and his passion for helping others.    Â
"Coach Mac's imprint on this university transcends his incredible accomplishments on the football field," said Athletic Director Rick George. "This statue and the scholarship created in his honor will stand as a permanent monument to those accomplishments and the many lives he touched during and after his time as head football coach. It also further demonstrates our ongoing commitment to honoring CU football's illustrious past."Â
The CU Buff Club is currently accepting donations for both the statue and the scholarship endowment. Proceeds to the statue will go toward finishing touches on the project, while proceeds to the scholarship ensure the endowment lives on in perpetuity. Upon taking the reins of the Buffaloes in 1982, McCartney, who passed away on January 10, created a national powerhouse at CU, winning three Big 8 Conference titles and claiming the National Championship crown in 1990. His 93 wins are the most in school history.   Â
