June 12, 2025 | Men's Golf, Women's Golf
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Five University of Colorado golfers made the cut here Thursday in the 110th Southwestern Amateur, one of the oldest and most prestigious events of its kind west of the Mississippi.
Sophomore-to-be Parker Paxton is tied for fifth after fashioning a 6-under 72-66—138 score; he recorded seven birdies Thursday with just one bogey on the 7,107-yard, par-72 Outlaw Course at Desert Mountain Golf Club. He is three shots off the lead, held by UT Chattanooga junior Camden Braidech.
Senior-to-be Hunter Swanson tied the second-lowest score Thursday – a 7-under 65 – and he stands at 5-under 139 through two rounds. He had bogey-free round with seven birdies and is tied for seventh. He tied for third last year (11-under 277, also at Desert Mountain).
Junior-to-be Brandon Knight is tied for 14th with a 68-73—141 scorecard; he had an eagle (his second in two days), two birdies, 10 pars and five bogeys on Thursday. He opened strong with a 30 on the back nine Wednesday (an eagle and four birds).
Incoming USC transfer Jackson Rivera is tied for 18th with a 72-70—142 performance; he was cruising along and had a score in the 60's set in his sights until he unfortunately finished with a double bogey; up to that point, he had five birdies, 11 pars and a single bogey. CU officials will know if he has one or two years of eligibility remaining likely by the end of June.
Junior-to-be Ty Holbrook tied for 49th with a 73-75—148 (4-over) effort, as he missed the cut by four strokes.
CU has had one champion in the event, when Scott Petersen claimed the title ahead of his senior year with a 7-under 281 score at Rio Rancho Golf Club in Albuquerque; Derek Tolan finished second (289, +1) at Badlands Golf Course in Las Vegas.
WOMEN'S 5TH ANNUAL SOUTHWESTERN: Colorado junior-to-be Carolyn Fuller rallied to make the cut, as she is 3-over with a 77-70—147 score on Desert Mountain's 6,278-yard, par-72 layout for the ladies. Playing near her hometown Phoenix and Pinnacle High School, she was hanging around the cutline most of her round but a birdie on No. 17 enabled her to advance to Friday's third round, tied for 28th overall, 13 out of the lead but five strokes out of the top 10. She had five birdies and 10 pars opposite three bogeys in tying for the fifth-lowest score for the day.
The fields for both were cut to the low 36 plus ties for the final two rounds, slated for Friday and Saturday.
