SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — There was mostly good play by the five University of Colorado golfers – four men and one woman -- here Friday in the 110th Southwestern Amateur, one of the oldest and most prestigious events of its kind west of the Mississippi.
Sophomore-to-be Parker Paxton moved up three spots into a tie for second after a third round 3-under 69, which followed up a 66 Thursday on the 7,107-yard, par-72 Outlaw Course at Desert Mountain Golf Club. He an eagle, five birdies and eight pars with four bogeys Friday, opening each side at 3-under through three holes. He is three shots off the lead, held by UC Riverside sophomore Hartej Grewal, who is in at 10-under 206 after a 67 Friday.
Incoming USC transfer Jackson Rivera zoomed from a tie for 18th into one for seventh after firing a 5-under 67, a smooth round in which he had six birdies and 11 pars and a single bogey. He came on fire, starting on No. 11, birdying five of his first eight holes before making that only bogey on No. 1.
Junior-to-be Brandon Knight is tied for ninth, jumping five spots after fashioning a 3-under 69. He was solid all day, with four birdies and 13 pars and like Rivera, just one bogey.
Twelve players of the 40 that made the cut shot scores in the 60's Friday, three by Buffaloes represented here. Paxton and Knight are two of just nine to record two sub-70 scores here thru Friday.
Senior-to-be Hunter Swanson slipped from a tie in seventh into a tie for 30th after struggling with a 5-over 77. He had three birdies and eight pars against six bogeys and a double, and couldn't get much going – he only had successive pars once (three in a row, Nos. 17, 18 and 1).
Rivera and Knight will play in the same threesome for the final round, teeing off at 9:10 a.m. MDT off the No. 1 tee; Paxton is scheduled to start on No. 1 at 9:30, while Swanson will start on No. 11, also at 9:10.
CU has had one champion in the event, when Scott Petersen claimed the title ahead of his senior year with a 7-under 281 score at Rio Rancho Golf Club in Albuquerque; Derek Tolan finished second (289, +1) at Badlands Golf Course in Las Vegas.
WOMEN'S 5TH ANNUAL SOUTHWESTERN: Colorado junior-to-be Carolyn Fuller continued her solid play, firing a 1-under 71 to move up seven spots into a tie for 21st with a 2-over 218 total on Desert Mountain's 6,278-yard, par-72 layout for the women. Back in her home state (she prepped at Phoenix's Pinnacle High School), she had five birdies and 10 pars opposite two bogeys and a double. She is eight out of the lead – after being 13 back at the midway point – and just four strokes out of the top 10.
Charlotte freshman Pimchompoo Chaisilprungruang is the leader with a 6-under 210 total. For Saturday's final round, Fuller will tee off in the last group at 10:30 a.m. MDT off the No. 11 tee.
