Hodge Ready To Make Most Of Extra Opportunity
August 22, 2025 | Football
BOULDER -- In the world of college football, leadership is often defined by actions rather than words. Preston Hodge, in his second year as a cornerback at Colorado, has embodied this principle for much of his career, which includes stops at Liberty (2022-23) and Navarro College (2021).
However, this season, Hodge has embraced a new role, fueled by his dedication to his family, his teammates, and his love for the game.
A Blessing For The Family
Hodge's transformation from a historically quiet player to a vocal leader began with a significant event in his life – an extra season of eligibility thanks to the "JUCO rule."
For Hodge, a family man with a wife and son at home, this additional year is more than just an opportunity to play football; it's a chance to provide for his family and pursue his dreams.
"It was a blessing from God," he said. "I wouldn't change it for the world, how anything went down."
Hodge made a promise to himself – he wouldn't be the same person. The Waxahachie, Texas, native decided to switch his number from 24 to 4 and step out of his comfort zone. His goal was clear: to become a better version of himself, a leader on and off the field.
A Coach That Cares
One of the driving forces behind Hodge's transformation is his relationship with Colorado defensive passing game coordinator/cornerbacks coach Kevin Mathis. Hodge cites Mathis' honesty as a key factor in his growth as a player.
"You need someone to be honest with you," Hodge said. "He does a good job of telling you things you need to hear, especially to get you where you want to be, which, for me, is the NFL."
Mathis' experience and guidance have been instrumental in shaping Hodge's ambitions for a future in professional football.
"(Hodge) has been doing a great job of being that leader that we need in that back end," Mathis said. "He has come miles and miles in how he's practicing and approaching this year. That feeds on the rest of the guys in that (defensive back) room."
A Team That Fights Together
Hodge's journey isn't just about personal growth; it's also about the camaraderie and brotherhood he shares with his teammates. Reuniting with Tyrecus Davis, a teammate at Navarro CC, has been a blessing for Hodge.
They worked tirelessly to reach the highest level of college football, and now, on the grand stage, they're living their dreams together.
"We stayed down, we kept our head down and look where we're at now – on the highest stage, competing in front of thousands of fans on national television," Hodge said. "It's a blessing."
Another Great Season Ahead
As the season unfolds, Hodge is excited about the prospects for the team. Despite the departure of star players like Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders, Hodge remains optimistic.
"The sky's the limit for this team," he said. "We can still take it to the top."
With his extra year of eligibility, Hodge is determined to make the most of this opportunity. He's stepping up as a leader, bringing younger players into the film room, and ensuring that the entire team is on the same page.
Hodge understands that when they take the field, they're not just individuals; they're a united force with a common goal.
As he embarks on this final season, he does so with an unwavering commitment to his family, his team, and the game he loves.
