Several Buffs Begin PGA Tour Q-School This Week
BOULDER – Justin Biwer, who set numerous records while lettering four years in golf at Colorado, has earned Korn Ferry Tour (KFT) card for the 2027 season.
Biwer, a 2025 CU graduate, played on the PGA Tour Americas circuit this past year, a 15-tournament schedule with events all throughout the Western Hemisphere. Those who finished the season in the top 10 points list earned their KFT cards; Biwer finished seventh.
"These last six months have been a roller coaster, but i couldn't ask for it to have gone any differently," Biwer said. "I feel like I learned so much over that time. It's been so awesome to have my mom with me for a lot of that time and to have both my parents here this week was really cool to share this all with them."
He played in 12 of the events, making the cut in nine, finishing with one win, three top five, four top 10 and six top 25 efforts. He won the CRMC Championship in Brainard, Minn., in August with a 22-under par 65-61-65-67—258 scorecard, and was the runner-up in the ATB Classic in Alberta, Canada in September (16-under 64-65-70-65—264). His stroke average for the tour was 68.2 for 42 rounds.
"An exciting season for Justin, which isn't even done yet with PGA Tour Q-School Finals ahead of him in a few weeks," said CU head coach Roy Edwards. "He has played well all throughout the year on a variety of tours and his success is a testament to his work ethic and competitive will."
He owns or shares 44 individual CU records he established in his four years under Edwards.
Biwer had previously qualified for the final stage of the PGA Tour Q-School where he will attempt to earn full status on the PGA Tour next year. That is set for TPC Sawgrass and Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida, Dec. 10-13. The top five finishers earn their PGA Tour cards, with the next 40 finishers and ties earn Korn Ferry Tour membership. Remaining finishers receive conditional Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Americas status.
PGA Q SCHOOL: Several Buffs start pursuit of their ultimate professional dreams Tuesday through Friday (Oct. 20-23). Derek Fribbs ('13), Adam Matteson ('23), Yannik Paul ('18) and Hunter Swanson ('26, current assistant coach) begin play in the first stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School on a course they are all very familiar with, the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque in a 76-player competition. Next week (Oct. 27-30), Dylan McDermott ('25) will attempt the same at Bermuda Run (N.C.) Country Club, where the older brother of CU junior Parker Paxton – Easton – will be in the field. At Abilene (Texas) Country Club, Josh Creel ('10) and the older brother of CU senior Ty Holbrook – Jake – are entered. Then at Arizona National Golf Club in Tucson (Nov. 3-6), Tucker Clark ('25) is in the field, along with Joe Neuheisel, youngest son of Rick, the former CU head football coach. At Soboba Springs Golf Club in San Jacinto, Calif., Michael Feuerstein ('03) will attempt to do so – at the age of 42.
Anywhere from 18 to 22 players advance into the second stage of qualifying depending on each site's field size. Second stages all take place Dec. 1-4 in Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida and Georgia.
