Colorado to Face UCF, Houston

March 11, 2026 | Tennis

The Buffs take on two more ranked conference foes this weekend.

BOULDER – Following a split weekend and a dominant upset, the Colorado Buffaloes tennis team will head south for another weekend of conference play.

This past week, Colorado went 1-1, dropping a close 4-3 match against Kansas State, then followed with a 4-2 win over No. 28 Oklahoma State. Following the win, Colorado climbed back up in the rankings to No. 51, the highest since 2024.

"It was a nice win for us last weekend," said head coach Anthony Pham, "And for us we just want to keep building. Every match we play from here on out will be against a good team in conference."

The Buffs also earned a Big 12 Player of the Week owed to Aya El Sayed, finding an upset over No. 53 Olivia Lincer in straight sets.

Colorado faces No. 20 University of Central Florida on Friday, followed by a trip to Texas to play No. 36 University of Houston.

The Buffs have only played UCF once prior to this week's meeting, falling 4-0 to the Knights on home turf last year. UCF is currently 10-2 overall this season, and 3-1 in Big 12, with their only loss in conference play coming from No. 75 Arizona.

The Knights have one ranked doubles pairing, as Olivia Bergler and Lauren Seye sit at No. 80 with a 10-3 record.

Last season, the Knights made it to the Big 12 Championship finals, facing Texas tech, and falling just short of the title, 4-2, their only conference loss of the season.

"Central Florida is always a strong program which will be a challenge for us," said Pham, "Houston has a much-improved team, playing them in Houston will present different challenges and different conditions then what we have here."

As for Houston, the Buffs hold a 5-3 series record after taking their fifth victory last season at home, 4-1. The series has continued since their first match up in 1979, where the two finished in a tie at Houston, 4-4.

Houston has had a positive turn around since last season, as the team finished with a 4-16 overall record with one conference victory. This season, Cougars are currently 11-2 overall and tied 2-2 in conference play. Their only losses this season came from then No. 12 ASU and Arizona.

Houston is home to one ranked doubles duo, Sophie Schouten and Chems Doha Zeghlouli, who hold the No. 89 ranking.

"This will be a great opportunity for us, I know the team is excited to get on the road and play two good teams," said Pham.

Friday's match against UCF will begin at 4 p.m. (MT) at the USTA National Campus. On Sunday, the match against Houston will be held at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility, beginning at noon.
