April 10, 2026 | General
BOULDER, Colo.-- The University of Colorado Athletic Department has named Kasey Byers its new Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Relations and Brand Strategy, Director of Athletics Fernando Lovo announced today. In this role Byers will oversee marketing, creative services, fan engagement and community outreach, promotions, and Buff Vision while aligning brand management with communication for all 17 CU Athletics sport programs.
Byers comes to Colorado from the University of New Mexico where he served as Senior Associate AD for External Relations, overseeing all departments of external relations for the Lobos including communications, marketing, creative services, and live event and venue production. Under Byers's leadership UNM saw significant growth in football revenue and enjoyed a 58% increase in average football attendance, the largest in college football, which included the first sellout at University Stadium in 20 years. That increase was directly attributable to a revamped gameday experience conceived by Byers, which included the creation of a new fan tailgate area. He also helped secure the largest naming rights deal for the iconic New Mexico arena The Pit at nearly $18 million over 10 years while helping to develop a five phase $265 million renovation plan for the football stadium.
"I'm so thrilled to bring Kasey's passion for fan engagement and his enthusiasm for creating memorable experiences to CU Athletics," said Lovo. "Last year, Kasey transformed the football gameday experience at the University of New Mexico, creating an atmosphere that fans couldn't wait to enjoy. I look forward to him building on the incredible traditions we have at CU while creating new, innovative ways for our students, alumni, and fans to engage with our student-athletes."
"I want to thank Fernando Lovo and the incredible people within CU Athletics for an opportunity that rarely comes along in one's career," said Byers. "Colorado has always held a personal connection for me, with family roots in eastern Colorado. To now call this place home and help tell the story of this athletic department is a responsibility I will never take for granted.
"Fernando and I share a vision and energy centered on providing a holistic experience for the student-athletes we serve. Continuing my journey under his leadership is a unique opportunity that my family and I could not pass up. We look forward to fully immersing ourselves in this department and community, and we are incredibly excited for what lies ahead. Sko Buffs!"
Coming to CU is a bit of a homecoming for Byers, who, after graduating with a degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Montana, started his career in sports as a Multimedia Producer for the Denver Broncos before taking positions at North Dakota State, a previous stint at New Mexico as Assistant AD for Lobo TV, and Oregon State. Prior to his most recent time at UNM, Byers was Director of Creative Video and then Senior Director of Creative Services for the University of Washington football team.
Byers is coming to Boulder with his family, fiancée Amy, and daughters Dani and Kazlin, while his son Alec lives in Oregon.
