Buffs Open In Second At Chambers Bay

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – On one of the longest days in collegiate golf, experience is critical.
The Colorado women's golf team showed just that on Monday.
With all five golfers returning from last year's Leadership and Golf Invitational, the Buffaloes had a solid all-around day to open this year's edition in second place, shooting 3-under-par during Monday's 36-hole marathon at Chambers Bay.
Colorado enters Tuesday's final 18 holes, two shots behind Tulsa, which rallied with three birdies over its final three holes to jump over the Buffaloes to 5-under and grabbing the first-day lead. Oregon State is in third place at 1-under, followed by SMU at even par and last year's Leadership and Golf champion Eastern Michigan at 3-over.
From tee to green, Chambers Bay plays at just under 6,100 yards. But the sprawling links-style course stretches across a wide expanse in the Pacific Northwest just south of Seattle, with elevation changes throughout. Those factors led to a nearly 11-hour day out on the course for the Buffaloes to tee off the season.
"It was a really great day out there for the Buffs," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "I think they played incredibly steady, smart, and controlled golf. We didn't see so many of the big numbers that have plagued us on this golf course in the past."
Colorado shot 2-under in the opening round, good enough for a three-way tie for third place behind SMU (-7) and Oregon State (-3). While most teams began to fall off in the afternoon, the Buffaloes kept on churning through the course. Colorado was 1-under in the second round, joining Tulsa (-3) as the only two schools to play in the red during the afternoon session.
"They did an awesome job of embracing what the links here give you," Sheils said. "We saw a ton of flighted shots through the wind, low-lofted chips, and strong lag putting.
"Experience definitely helped. They are well aware of how to play this course and their maturity showed today."
Senior Maya McVey led the Buffaloes on Monday at 4-under and is tied for third overall. McVey brushed off a couple of minor hiccups to record rounds of 71 and 69 and enters Tuesday's final round only two shots off the lead.
McVey started the day at 2-over through seven and then made four birdies over the next six holes to get to 2-under before finishing at 1-under. She fell back to 1-over with a double-bogey to open the second round on the par-4 seventh, but was flawless the rest of the way. McVey erased that double with back-to-back birdies at the 10th and 11th, and in total, recorded five birdies and 12 pars over the final 17 holes.
"Really fantastic day by Maya," Sheils said. "She stayed steady and patient until the very end. Finishing so strong on a day this long is no easy feat."
Junior Ellen O'Shaughnessy is tied for 13th overall at even par after a steady 36-hole performance, spending the entire day no more than two strokes, and mostly one, on either side of par. O'Shaughnessy shot a 73 in the first round. She was 1-over through her first six and remained even the rest of the round, including a stretch where she made par on seven-straight holes on the back nine.
O'Shaughnessy was two strokes better in the afternoon. After settling for bogey on her second hole, the par-4 fifth, she played error-free the rest of the way. She picked the stroke back up with a birdie on the par-5 eighth. O'Shaughnessy then made eight consecutive pars before climbing back into the red with another birdie at the par-3 17th and then ending her day with four straight pars.
Senior Carolyn Fuller is tied for 18th at 2-over. She matched McVey for the day's low round, shooting a 69 in the morning session. Fuller was 1-over after five holes and stayed there through 10 before a torrid finish. She made five birdies in a seven-hole stretch, including three in a row from the 18th, then after the turn at the first and second. Fuller shot a 77 in the second round, but her morning round kept her well within reach of the top 10.
Colorado's two second-year golfers, who began their collegiate careers a year ago at this tournament, also had good outings. Teemapat Pateetin is tied for 21st at 3-over. After shooting a 76 in the morning, she came on strong in the afternoon with a 71, playing her final eight holes of the 36-hole marathon at 2-under. Brenna Higgins is tied for 37th at 5-over. She had her best round in the morning with a 73 before finishing the afternoon with a 76.
Oregon State's Raya Nakao is the 36-hole leader at 6-under, one stroke better than Nina Choe of UC Davis with McVey and Zoe Shamy of Tulsa two shots behind.
Tuesday's third and final round is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. MT.
NOTES: Fuller's 69 marked the 10th round in the 60s of her career, putting her in third place and just one off the school record of 11 shared by Esther Lee (2015-17) and Kirsty Hodgkins (2016-21). "Very proud of Carolyn's under-par round as she inches closer to the school record of rounds in the 60s," Sheils said … It was Fuller's 16th career under-par round, putting her in sole possession of eighth place in that category on CU's all-time charts … McVey recorded her third round in the 60s as a Buffalo … Colorado's 3-under-par score for 36 holes was 23 strokes better than its first day total at the 2025 Leadership and Golf event, where the Buffaloes eventually finished tied for ninth at 34-over.
