STANFORD, Calif. – The Colorado women's golf team tied for 15th place at the Stanford Intercollegiate, which wrapped up Sunday at the Stanford Golf Course.
The Buffaloes posted a three-round total of 49-over-par 901 on the 6,267-yard, par 71 layout.
Colorado was 25-over in Sunday's final round and finished level with CSU Fullerton in the team standings, and four shots ahead of Oregon State.
Senior Maya McVey again led the Buffs, closing with a 1-under 70 for a three-round total of 1-over 214, tying for 16th overall. She opened the week with back-to-back rounds of 72 and was Colorado's most consistent player throughout the tournament.
"Maya played awesome golf," Colorado Head Coach Madeleine Sheils said. "Earning a top-20 in this field is an impressive feat. She has great focus and determination, and it showed this week."
Starting on the eighth hole in the shotgun start, McVey opened with a birdie on the 152-yard par-3. After pars on her next three holes, she birdied the 477-yard par-5 12th to reach 2-under. She gave a shot back with a bogey at the par-4 15th, then parred the 16th, 17th, and 18th. After a par on the first, she bogeyed the par-4 second to return to even, but answered with a birdie on the 143-yard par-3 fourth and closed with pars on the final three holes.
Senior Carolyn Fuller carded birdies at the par-5 seventh and the par-4 13th on the way to a 77, finishing tied for 59th at 12-over.
Junior Ellen O'Shaughnessy tied for 81st at 17-over and sophomore Brenna Higgins tied for 86th at 19-over. Sophomore Teemapat Pateetin also made two birdies in her round at the par-5 first and at the 171-yard par-3 14th and finished in 92nd place at 14-over.
Host Stanford won the team title at 28-under, 19 shots clear of runner-up Virginia (-9). Southern California took third at 7-under. Standford's Meja Ortengren won the individual title at 14-under 199, two strokes ahead of teammate Andrea Revuelta.
"It was a very disappointing showing as a team," Sheils said. "We have to improve our adaptability on the course and be better at managing bad days and getting more out of our good days, and that's on me as their coach. We'll take this week as another learning lesson and look forward to getting back to practice."
Colorado will close out the Fall season at the Nanea Invitational on October 26-28, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
