Buffs 14th After Day One At Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. – The Colorado women's golf team is in 14th place after the first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate, played Friday at the Stanford Golf Course.
Â
The Buffaloes shot 15-over-par on Stanford's 6,267-yard, par-71 course and remain within reach of the top half of the field with 36 holes to play over the weekend. Colorado is three strokes out of 11th place and eight out of the top eight.
Â
No. 12-ranked Stanford leads after round one at 13-under, five strokes better than No. 4 Virginia. No. 2 Southern California was the only other team to play under par on Friday at 1-under.
Â
Colorado had several bright spots throughout the round, cashing in on scoring chances, but a few big-number holes pushed the Buffaloes a little further down the standings than their effort on the course would suggest. Two holes in particular hurt the most. Colorado golfers were 9-over on the 422-yard par-4 18th alone and lost another three strokes on the 385-yard par-4 fifth. Those big number holes offset the Buffaloes' 11 birdies in the round.
Â
"I think we played better than we scored today," Colorado Head Coach Madeleine Sheils said. "The big numbers on a couple holes were the scorecard killer, but the team remained composed and played a lot of good golf. I think we're poised for a good round tomorrow."
Â
Senior Maya McVey led Colorado, shooting 1-over 72. Starting on the back, she was 2-over through nine but got back to even with birdies on the 501-yard par-5 first and the 170-yard par-3 third. McVey lost those strokes with a double on the fifth, but closed out 1-under over her final four holes thanks to a birdie at the par-5 seventh. She is tied with nine others for 26th overall, just two shots out of the top 20 and three out of the top 10.
Â
Junior Ellen O'Shaughnessy is tied for 46th, carding a 3-over 74. O'Shaughnessy got off to a strong start, making birdie on three of her first four holes to reach 3-under early. She ran into trouble through the last half of the back nine, though, dropping back to 3-over. O'Shaughnessy recovered after the turn, playing steady on the front nine and making par on all nine holes.
Â
Sophomore Brenna Higgins is tied for 60th at 5-over. Junior Carolyn Fuller is right behind, tied for 72nd at 6-over. Sophomore Teemapat Pateetin is tied for 87th at 9-over.
Â
Stanford's Andrea Revuelta leads by one stroke at 6-under and holds a one-shot lead over Virginia's Jaclyn LaHa and Iowa State's Alexandra Vidal Rivera.
Â
Colorado will group with individuals from Stanford and Virginia in Saturday's second round with those pairings starting off the No. 1 tee beginning at 8:30 a.m.
