Buffs 10th After Day One At Ron Moore
October 02, 2026 | Women's Golf
HIGHLANDS RANCH – The Colorado women's golf team is in 10th place after the first round of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate, played Friday at the University of Denver Golf Club.
Â
A slow start pushed the Buffaloes down the leaderboard from the onset, finishing the par-72, 6,620-yard course at 4-over-par 292. Despite the sluggish start, Colorado finds itself only three shots out of the top five and four out of the top three with two more rounds this weekend.
Â
Tulane leads overall at 9-under, six strokes better than UNLV, the only two teams to play under par for the round. Denver, on its home course, is third after an even-par session. The Buffaloes are part of a seven-team logjam between fourth and 10th place, including Notre Dame and Xavier, both at 1-over.
Â
Starting on the back nine, Colorado was 5-over, five holes in, logging only one birdie during that stretch, from sophomore Ananthi Vivek on the par-3 13th. The Buffaloes settled in heading back toward the clubhouse, gaining a stroke back to hit the turn at 4-over.
Â
Colorado had an up-and-down front nine. The Buffaloes started to score more, logging eight birdies among their four scoring golfers, but eight bogeys offset them as Colorado finished even on the front.
Â
"We got off to a rough start, but the team competed hard and had somewhat of a bounce back through the back nine, so that was good to see," Colorado Head Coach Madeleine Sheils said. "We definitely struggled on the greens today, our speed control can probably continue to improve and just our confidence around the hole."
Â
Senior Maya McVey and sophomore Brenna Higgins led the Buffaloes, each shooting even par 72 and are tied for 20th with six others heading into Saturday's second round.
Â
McVey made par on her first nine holes and then jumped to 2-under after the turn with back-to-back birdies at the par-4 first and par-5 second. She fell back into the black with three bogeys over her next six holes, but rallied to even with a birdie on her final hole, the 517-yard par-5 ninth.
Â
McVey knows Colorado has a chance to bounce back over the weekend, looking no further than the Red Sky Classic 10 days ago. Colorado was 14-over in the first round before bouncing back to shoot 11-under the final two days.
Â
"We have a good chance of being able to come back from this first round like we did last week," McVey said. "I have no worries that we'll be able to do that."
Â
Higgins was 1-over through six before making birdie at the par-4 16th and par-5 18th to leap to 1-under through nine. She fell back to 1-over with back-to-back bogeys at the first and second, but played mistake-free over her final seven, getting back to even with a birdie at the par-4 sixth.
Â
"(Brenna and Maya) have been really consistent so far and they're both really solid players with a lot of fight in them," Sheils said. "Not ever even par round is pretty, but they are playing solid right now."
Â
Junior Ellen O'Shaughnessy is tied with four others for 28th after shooting 1-over 73. She was 3-over through seven holes before picking up her first of three birdies on the 154-yard par-3 17th. O'Shaughnessy briefly fell back to 3-over after a bogey at the fourth, bouncing back immediately with a birdie at the par-3 fifth. She finished off her round with three pars and her final birdie at the par-4 eighth.
Â
Vivek, in her season debut, is tied for 45th at 3-over after a round of 75. She was 3-over on the back nine, but held even on the front, with the help of birdies on a pair of par 4s at the first and seventh.
Â
Senior Carolyn Fuller is tied for 63rd at 5-over.
Â
Freshman Isabella Piazza is tied for 73rd at 7-over and sophomore Teemapat Pateetin is tied for 82nd at 10-over. Both are competing as individuals.
Â
Boise State's Leia Chung, Denver's Logan Hale and Tulane's Sophia Macias share the first round lead after carding 5-under rounds on Friday.
Â
Colorado will pair with Northern Colorado and Long Beach State in Saturday's second round, once again starting on the back nine, and teeing off between 9:50 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
