Buffs Open Red Sky Classic In 18th

WOLCOTT, Colo. – The Colorado women's golf team is in 18th place after the first round of the GolfWeek Red Sky Classic, played Monday at the Red Sky Golf Club.

The Buffaloes shot a 14-over-par 302 on the 6,383-yard, par-72 Fazio Course, finishing better than just two opponents during the opening round.

Colorado got off to a slow start and never fully recovered. Starting on the back nine, the Buffaloes struggled collectively with 11 bogeys or worse on the first seven holes. Colorado picked up two strokes at the turn with birdies at the 17th and 18th. However, scoring holes remained at a premium, as Colorado recorded only two birdies as a team during the second half of the day.

Southern California set a Red Sky Classic single-round scoring record at 22-under to take the first-round lead, 11 strokes ahead of Miami, with Texas A&M in third at 10-under.

"Obviously a disappointing day," Colorado Head Coach Madeleine Sheils said. "We struggled in nearly every part of the game and never quite got out of our own way. We had a productive practice after the round and expect to compete much harder tomorrow."

Colorado's bright spot was the continued solid play of senior Maya McVey, who led the Buffaloes with an even-par 72. McVey played the steadiest even round possible, making par on all 18 holes. She is tied for 33rd after the first round and only three strokes out of the top 10.

McVey has shot par or better in all four of her rounds this season. She is coming off a runner-up performance at last week's Leadership and Golf Invitational where she shot 6-under. Counting her even run today, McVey has made 24 consecutive pars and has shot par or better on her last 27 holes.

 "Great play by Maya today," Sheils said. "It's not often you make 18-straight pars! She is hitting it great and obviously playing very steady golf to make that many pars today.

Colorado true freshman Isabella Piazza made a strong debut on Monday and is tied for 58 overall after shooting 2-over 74 in her first collegiate round. Playing as an individual, the Phoenix native made birdie on her opening hole, the 167-yard par-3 10th, eventually finishing the back nine at 1-over. Piazza made four birdies, with the last coming on the 540-yard par-5 fifth to reach 2-over, then coasted in with four pars to finish her day.

"Nice start to Izzy's college career today," Sheils said. "Excited for what's to come for her."

Sophomore Brenna Higgins is tied for 78th after a 4-over round. Teemapat Pateetin and Carolyn Fuller join seven others tied for 86th place at 5-over. Ellen O'Shaughnessy is tied for 95th at 6-over.

As the team scores would indicate, USC dominated the individual leaderboard, claiming the top three spots. Jasmine Koo and Kalili Xiao are tied for the lead at 7-under with Kylie Chong in third one shot back.

Colorado will pair with Ball State, UNC Asheville and Mercer for Tuesday's second round, with those groups starting off the No. 10 tee at 11:12 a.m. Piazza, paired with individuals from Miami, New Mexico State and Kansas, will begin on the back nine at 10 a.m.
