Carolyn Fuller ties CU's career record for rounds in the 60s

WOLCOTT, Colo. – After a first round where nothing went right, Colorado women's golf returned to form on Tuesday, moving up six spots to 12th place following the second round of the GolfWeek Red Sky Classic at the Red Sky Golf Club.

The Buffaloes shot a 6-under-par 282 on the 6,383-yard, par-72 Fazio Course, improving on their first round score by a whopping 20 strokes. Through 36-holes, Colorado is 8-over, just four strokes from reaching the top half of the field.

"The team played with a ton more confidence and clarity," Colorado Head Coach Madeleine Sheils said. "They kept things simple and played like they know how. It was great to see that bounce back, and they're resolved to bring that same confidence and clarity into tomorrow and see how much higher we can climb."

Colorado tied for the biggest leap in the standings, had the best improvement by far, and matched the seventh-best round of the day overall. The Buffaloes largely stayed away from the big numbers and scored much better throughout the round. Colorado had 19 birdies from its scoring golfers on Tuesday compared to just seven in the first round.

Senior Carolyn Fuller and sophomore Brenna Higgins led the Buffaloes' attack, both recording 3-under 69 second-round scores. Fuller was a team-best eight strokes better from her first-round score while Higgins improved by seven.

Fuller's 69 also carried some historical significance as it was her 11th career round in the 60s, tying for the most in team history.

Fuller's record-tying round wasn't a given from the start. She was 2-over through five, but dialed it in over the next half of her round. She made the turn to the front at 1-over after a birdie on the 16th, then birdied three of the first four holes on the front to get back to 2-under. She dropped a stroke at the seventh, but made birdie on her final two holes at the 8th and 9th to equal Colorado's career mark.

"We are all very excited for Carolyn tying the school record for rounds in the 60s," Sheils said. "That is a huge accomplishment.

Fuller is tied for 48th overall for the tournament at 2-over.

Higgins is tied for 42nd overall at 1-over, following her second career round in the 60s. She had three birdies in a four-hole stretch at the beginning of her round to get to 2-under early. Higgins played steady through the turn, climbing to 4-under after her fifth birdie on the day at the par-4 fourth. Higgins dropped back down to 3-under on the eighth, but it was enough to clinch the second-best score of her Colorado career.

"Really nice rounds by both Brenna and Carolyn," Sheils said. "They both did a good job taking advantage of par 5 scoring today and also hit some wedges in close."

Senior Maya McVey turned in another fine performance, shooting a 72 for the second straight day, and is Colorado's overall leader through two rounds, tied for 38th overall at even par. Unlike Monday's literal even round with pars on all 18 holes, McVey had more of a variety on Tuesday.

McVey started hot with three-straight birdies on the 11th through the 13th. She dropped back to 1-under after six but made the turn at 2-under after a birdie at the 18th. McVey hit the roughest patch she's experienced all season, posting three bogeys on the first four holes of the front nine, but recovered to get back to even for the round with her fifth birdie of the day at the par-4 eighth.

Junior Ellen O'Shaughnessy was another with a good bounce-back round, carding a 72 on Tuesday. She was 2-over through six but then made three birdies in a seven-hole stretch to get back into the red. O'Shaughnessy had only two holes where she lost strokes and is tied for 71st overall at 6-over.

Sophomore Teemapat Pateetin is tied for 85th overall at 8-over after a second-round 75.

Freshman Isabella Piazza, playing as an individual, repeated her solid performance from Monday with another 74 in the second round. She is tied for 64th overall at 4-over.

Miami's Scarlett Schremmer took the individual lead after a 66 put her at 11-under after 36 holes and two shots better than USC's Sarah Hammett.

Colorado will pair with Denver, CSU Fullerton, and East Tennessee State in the final round, which features a shotgun start at 9:15 a.m. MT, with those groups beginning on the seventh through 11th holes. Piazza, paired with individuals from Denver, Miami and New Mexico State, starts on the 17th.
