Golfers Head Down I-25 For Two Air Force Meets

All nine Buffaloes to play in team or individual events
USAFA, Colo. – The Colorado men's golf team opened its season earlier this week and are already turning around to hit the links again as the Buffaloes will head down Interstate 25 to play in the two-part event, Air Force's 57th Annual Gene Miranda Invitational as a team event as the Gene Miranda Individual for the remainder of the team.
Colorado finished second, one stroke behind No. 10 Arkansas in the Vuori Invitational in San Diego; four Buffs finished in the top 16 which led to the team being coming in at No. 11 in the golf's Differential computer rankings, released on Wednesday.
The Buffaloes have played in the event 40 times, winning six times – last back-to-back in 2018 and 2019, with five runner-up efforts. Ten Buffaloes have been medalists, the last of whom was Daniel O'Loughlin in 2018. The team tournament will be played at Air Force's Eisenhower Golf Club's Blue Course.
CU head coach Roy Edwards will go with the same five players who were the designated scorers in the season opener – seniors Ty Holbrook and Brandon Knight, juniors Parker Paxton and Asher Whitaker and sophomore Tyler Long.
It will be the third time CU will send players for the individual event, which will be held at Eisenhower's Silver Course. Jack Hughes was the medalist in 2021, winning with 7-under scorecard of 74-65-70—209.
The remaining players on the CU roster will play in the Miranda indie event: second-year graduate Jackson Rivera, sophomore Casey Kosney and true freshmen Gavin Amella and Colt Farrow.
From the first competition in the fall on September 10th where three Buffs played in CSU's Ram Masters Invitational through the 30th when CU's two-part event concludes (the Mark Simpson Invitational and the Les Fowler Individual), the Buffaloes will have played in seven tournaments in 21 days.
"It's great to have the entire team here," Edwards said. "Eisenhower is truly one of the special places in college golf and it is an honor to compete on the base at the United States Air Force Academy. The golf course is simply spectacular. For this week we need to be very disciplined into and on the greens. If we do that well, I expect us to have a great tournament.
'This is the second of four straight (team) tournaments," he added. "We chose this schedule because we knew this team of student-athletes would be up for the competitive challenge it is going to present. We are excited to see what we are made of.'
EISENHOWER GOLF COURSE: The Blue Course of the Eisenhower Golf Club opened in the 1959 and is named after former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who took part in the dedication ceremony. The 7,541 yard, par 72 course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and was ranked as the third best military course in the nation (PGA.com) and the 24th best college course (Golfweek) in the country. The Silver Course, designed by an excellent Colorado architect, Frank Hummel, is the newer of the two Eisenhower courses. It is shorter than the Blue Course, but makes up for its lack of length with fast, tricky greens, narrow fairways and many hazards.
THE FORMAT: The team competition will be held on the Blue Course with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. MDT on Saturday and Sunday and at 7:30 a.m. on Monday. The standard 5-for-4 scoring format will be utilized for the team score. All individuals will play on the Silver Course, with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday and at 8:30 a.m. on Monday. All teams have practice rounds Friday.
