Golfers In New Mexico For Tucker Invitational

CU's third tournament in 11 days
ALBUQUERQUE – The Colorado men's golf team arrived here late Wednesday in preparation for the 71st Annual New Mexico William H. Tucker Invitational, set for the Friday and Saturday.
It will already be the third tournament of the young season for CU, having finished second in San Diego's Vuori Invitational last week and then winning Air Force's Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational this past Monday.
Two rounds will be played on Friday with the third and final round Saturday on the University of New Mexico's 7,555-yard, par-72 Championship South Course.
The same five players who were CU's designated scorers have made the trip to New Mexico: Ty Holbrook and Brandon Knight, juniors Parker Paxton and Asher Whitaker and sophomore Tyler Long. Holbrook and Knight tied for third in Monday's Air Force Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, with all five of the Buffs placing in the top 13. Sophomore Casey Kosney will play as an individual, as he is coming off being a co-medalist in Air Force's individual event.
"It's good to be right back at it at the Tucker, one of the most historic events in college golf," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "The (UNM) South Championship Course is one of the best in college golf and really tests every part of your game. It's always a great field and this week will be a test of patience, as it looks like we will have to be adaptive and flexible in some changing weather conditions."
While the temperature should be in the mid-70's both days, the forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms on Friday. Winds could gust up to 24 miles per hour early Friday before settling down.
In addition to Colorado and host New Mexico, the 15-team field includes Arizona, Arkansas State, BYU, Grand Canyon, Long Beach State, Missouri, New Mexico State, San Diego State, Santa Clara, SMU, Texas-El Paso, UC Santa Barbara and UNLV.
The Buffaloes have played all 70 previous Tuckers, one of the oldest tournaments west of the Mississippi, joined only by host New Mexico and New Mexico State every year. After posting 16 top five finishes including four runner-up finishes through the years, CU finally broke through and won the Tucker for the first time in 2024. The Buffs tied for third a year ago. CU has had one medalist in the event, current associate head coach Derek Tolan, who finished with a 5-under 211 score in 2009. Two other Buffs finished second, Marc Crabtree in 1978 and Rick Cramer in 1981. Holbrook's 6-under 210 last year for seventh place is the best-ever individual score by a Buff on the challenging UNM course.
After a quick turnaround, CU will return home to host the 16th annual Mark Simpson-Colorado Invitational Sept. 29-30 at Boulder Country Club (along with hosting the Les Fowler Individual Sept. 28-29 at Bear Creek Golf Club in Southwest Denver).
