BOULDER – The Colorado men's golf team is set to host the 16th annual Mark Simpson-Colorado Invitational this week at Boulder Country, simultaneously running the Les Fowler Individual Invitational at Bear Creek Golf Club in Southwest Denver.
The two tournaments are named for the previous two legendary CU head coaches who both also played for the Buffaloes, Les Fowler (1948-77) and Mark Simpson (1977-2005); each had the reins of the program for 29 years. Current head coach Roy Edwards, who is in his 21st season, created both events in their honor.
Arkansas State returns to defend its title in the Simpson event, as the Red Wolves defeated the Buffaloes by a stroke last September when it was held at Colorado National Golf Club. Boulder Country Club plays to a par-70 format, covering 7,085 yards. This will be the third time BCC is hosting the tournament, having done so previously in 2015 and 2022. Two rounds are slated for Tuesday with the final round on Wednesday.
Colorado will have all nine of its players competing in the Simpson, four individually. The five who will contribute to the team score are seniors Brandon Knight and Ty Holbrook, juniors Parker Paxton and Asher Whitaker and sophomore Tyler Long. Tuesday features a shotgun start on all holes at 8:15 a.m., with CU beginning on the 1st through 4th holes and paired with Utah, Wyoming and the University of San Diego. They will finish the first round and continue right into the second.
The four Buffs to vie individually are graduate Jackson Rivera, sophomore Casey Kosney and freshmen Gavin Amella and Colt Farrow.
The Simpson will sport a 17-team field, as in addition to CU and Arkansas State, it includes Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Denver, Long Beach State, Missouri-Kansas City, Nevada, Northern Colorado, Pacific, San Diego, Texas-El Paso, Utah, Utah State, Utah Valley and Wyoming. The Fowler, previously held last year and in 2019, features only individuals and no team scoring. Players from Air Force, BYU, Colorado Christian, Colorado-Mines, Colorado State, Denver, Garden City CC, Long Beach State, Nevada, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are entered at Bear Creek, a par-72 layout that covers 7,276 yards that is nestled between Southwest Denver and Morrison, home of the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater. It will feature two rounds starting at 8 a.m. Monday and the third and final round on Tuesday.

The Buffaloes opened the year with a runner-up finish in San Diego's Vuori Invitational (defeated by No. 13 Arkansas by one stroke), then won the Air Force Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational by 15 shots before placing seventh in the New Mexico William H. Tucker Invitational on Saturday.
The Buffaloes have won the Simpson outright five times and were co-champions on three other occasions. The last time CU won was 2019, as it has finished as the runner-up the last four years by a combined eight strokes.
"Certainly we are excited to host the Simpson once again at Boulder Country Club, and to show off its freshly completed renovation," Edwards said. "BCC is one of our main home courses along with Colorado National and TPC Colorado we are proud to call our own.
"We have had a really good start to the year with the only speed bump being the final round of the Tucker," he continued. "We expect our guys to come out hungry and determined to play well this week. We have a great field of teams coming into Boulder and we encourage any and all to come out and watch."
