Kritza on Penewell

Alex has a mature approach to the game and provides a valuable depth and has a team first attitude that will prove very important throughout the season.

 

As a freshman in 2008

Penewell played in 12 matches and earned four starts. She made her debut against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (8/30) and recorded four kills on 10 attacks with one error to hit .300. Penewell made her first career start replacing an injured Lauren Schaefer against Kansas (9/17), and made the most of the opportunity. She led CU with 14 kills, a .600 hitting percentage, eight block assists, and 18.0 points (all career-highs), propelling the team to a 3-2 victory. Three times on the season Penewell posted eight blocks in a match (Iowa State, 10/18; at Texas Tech, 10/25). She averaged 1.14 blocks per set.

 

High School 

Penewell played for the Newport Harbor Sailors and earned two letters. Her senior year the Sailors recorded a 25-4 record. She tallied 207 kills and 57 blocks. As a senior, she was named to the Durango Classic All-Tournament Team and was named the Daily Pilot Athlete of the Week. At the close of the season she was named to the All-Sunset League First Team, Daily Pilot Dream Team and All-Orange County team. NHHS won the Sunset League Championship in 2007 and 06. Penewell’s freshman and sophomore teams were the Sea View League Champions.

 

Personal  

Penewell was born on May 23, 1990. She is the daughter of Robert and Renee Penewell. She has one older brother, Hunter. Penewell enjoys playing beach volleyball. She also enjoys Pilates, as her mother is a Pilates instructor.

                                                               

Academics  

Penewell is an open major at Colorado.
