One of the top right side hitters in the region, Allie Griffin will look to add to her nationally recognized resume as she begins her third year as a full-time starter for the Buffaloes. CU’s active leader in kills with 797, she is well on pace to become the 12th Buffalo to record 1,000 career kills. Griffin also enters 2005 just 11 blocks shy of 200 giving her the chance to become just the seventh CU player with 1,000 kills and 200 blocks. Her name can also be found among CU’s top 20 in assists and attacks and top 30 in digs.
As a Junior in 2004...
Playing and starting every game and match for the Buffaloes on the right side in 2004, Griffin earned AVCA All-Central Region first team honors and was given honorable mention to the AVCA All-America team. Griffin became CU’s 14th first team all-region pick and is the eighth different Buffalo to be so honored. She also kept CU’s streak alive of producing at least one all-region player for eight-straight seasons. Her all-region honor followed a well deserved spot on the All-Big 12 Conference first team. Griffin led Colorado in kills with 420, ranking 12th on the Buffs’ single-season list. She also showed her versatility by ranking first on the team in service aces, second in digs and third in blocks. Griffin ranked fifth in the Big 12 in kills for both overall matches (4.24 kpg) and conference only contests (4.29 kpg). She compiled a team-leading eight double-doubles in 2004 and led or co-led the Buffaloes in kills in 18 out of 28 matches. She had five matches of 20-plus kills and seven matches of 20-plus points. Griffin’s successful season started right away as she was named to the Oregon Classic All-Tournament team averaging 5.3 kills, 2.5 digs, 0.6 blocks and hit .590 over the season’s first three matches. Griffin was awarded MVP honors at the Colorado Invitational by averaging 3.75 kills, 1.75 digs and 0.93 blocks. She achieved season highs with 25 kills twice ? at Oklahoma (10/16) and vs. Texas Tech (10/30). She also established new personal standards with 18 digs at Iowa State (10/5) and eight blocks at Texas Tech on (9/29).
As a Sophomore in 2003...
Griffin was one of just two Buffs, along with all-region middle blocker Monique Gerlach, to start every match and game for the Buffs. She made the transition from middle blocker to the right side smoothly, ranking second on the team in overall kills (343) and total blocks (86) and third in kills per game (3.09 kpg). She had 61 assists, the highest mark for a non-setter on the team. She topped the Buffs in total kills during Big 12 Conference matches (231) including a personal-best and team season-high 27 kills at Texas A&M (9/24). She recorded double digits in kills in 17 of 31 matches and led the Buffs in kills in seven matches. Griffin earned a spot on the Colorado Invitational All-Tournament team hitting .340 (25 kills-8 errors-50 attacks) while averaging 4.2 kills, 1.3 digs and 1.2 blocks per game.
As a Freshman In 2002...
Griffin played in 16 of the team’s 30 matches, starting once, and saw time in 29 of 111 games. Although her time was limited behind two All-Big 12 middles, she took advantage of the time when it came her way. She led the Buffs in kills once, attack percentage twice and blocks twice. She was unstoppable against Texas-Arlington when she recorded eight kills off of 11 attacks with no errors for a .727 hitting percentage. She also recorded four assists and five blocks in the all-around performance, each of those turning out to be season highs. She finished the year with 34 kills, a .228 hitting percentage and 12 blocks.
High School...
Griffin graduated from Santa Fe Christian High School in Solana Beach, Calif., after lettering four times in volleyball under three different head coaches. She led her teams to a combined 53-12 record over her junior and senior seasons. Her freshman team lost in the state quarterfinals while SFCHS was the CIF runner-up and California state runner-up during her senior season. Both her sophomore and junior years the team lost in the first round of the state playoffs. She was an All-District selection each of her four years, offensive MVP of SFCHS her sophomore through senior seasons, All-Metro her junior and senior seasons and was co-Most Valuable Player of her league and a member of the California All-Star team her senior season. She played for the Coast volleyball club in San Diego for one year as a senior in high school.
