Brent DePaepe has been a member of the University of Colorado athletic department since 2016 when he began as a contract designer and was quickly hired to be a full-time graphic designer. He was named the department’s creative director in 2021.
Hired as one of two full-time people in the creative department, he has been instrumental in the expansion of that department that now features more than a dozen full-time staff and 40 student workers, recognized widely as one of the best creative departments in the nation.
He began a freelance design company, the second such company of his career, in 2009 and worked exclusively in that job until joining CU in 2016, and it’s still operational. He started that company after moving back to Colorado from New Mexico, where he served as the commercial and residential lighting director for National Lighting in Albuquerque in 2007 before being a graphic designer for National Distributing in 2008.
He moved to Colorado the first time after graduating from the University of Northern Iowa in 2003 and was the creative director for MSR (Marketing, Solutions & Results) in Denver. Prior to that and before graduating from UNI, he began his first freelance design company in 2002 and continued that until 2005. While in college, he was the lead graphic designer at Dickey’s Printing in his hometown of Waterloo, Iowa, from 2001-04. His first design job came in 1999 at Power’s Manufacturing where he designed, screen-printed and embroidered current and throwback uniforms for high school, college and professional teams in baseball, football and basketball.
He was born January 4, 1978, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Edward and Judy DePaepe. His older brother Jason is CU’s Deputy Athletic Director and he has a younger sister, Jill. He resides in Arvada with his wife, Jamie, the couple wed in 2009 and have one son, Logan, born in 2011, along with a cat and a dog. He enjoys spending time with family and friends, camping, backpacking, fine art, fishing, golfing, frisbee golfing and photography. He is also a proud two-time cancer survivor.
