The University of Colorado volleyball team (4-4) beat Bowling Green (2-3) 30-16, 31-29, 30-24 in the first session of the eighth annual Colorado PowerBar Invitational Friday at the Coors/Events Conference Center here in Boulder. Texas-Arlington (4-3) beat the University of Maine (3-4) 30-18, 30-23, 30-19 in the first match of the invitational.
"This first match was a good way to start the tournament," Colorado head coach Pi'i Aiu said. "Some of our younger players got to see more action then they've been used to, and that was a valuable tool for us."
Sophomore setter/defensive specialist Allison Barnes saw more reps in the middle for Colorado as she recorded a season-high 15 assists in the match, filling in for senior All-American candidate Elizabeth Gower, and freshman Kelly Masumiya saw her first libero action in the match.
Junior middle blocker Monique Gerlach led Colorado in kills for the fourth time this season as she hit a team-high .588 against BGSU with 11 kills on 17 attacks with two blocks in the match. Freshman left side hitter Nicole Carr also hit in double-figures for the Buffs for the second time in 2002, registering 10 kills with a team-high seven digs.
Left side Susie Norris paced the Falcons with a match-high 15 kills and the match's only double-double as she tallied 10 digs to boot. Middle blocker Kristin Gamby recorded 11 kills for Bowling Green.
Colorado hit .324 as a team in the match, blocking five Falcon attacks and five service aces in the match. Bowling Green hit .196 overall with three blocks and two service aces.
Three individuals totaled double-figure kill numbers for Texas-Arlington in the Mavericks' win over the Black Bears. Middle blocker Caley Smith tallied a match-high 15 kills for UTA with a match-high .667 mark as she made only one error on 21 attacks. Outside hitter Carol Bozikis grabbed 12 kills and Amber Pack had 10 to contribute to the Mavericks' kill column.
Middle blocker Leah Guidinger led Maine with 11 kills in the match.
UTA hit .402 in their fourth victory of 2002, recording seven team blocks, while Maine hit .167 overall with five stuffs as a team.
Maine will face Bowling Green at 5 p.m. and Colorado will host Texas-Arlington at 7 p.m. to continue day-one PowerBar action. The invitational will conclude Saturday evening when Bowling Green and UTA play at 5 and Colorado and Maine play at 7 at the Coors Events/Conference Center in Boulder.
