DEFENSIVE EFFORT SPARKS BUFFS PAST BAYLOR

BOULDER ? Junior Nicole Carr registered a double-double and Colorado held Baylor to a .044 hitting percentage as the Buffaloes swept the Bears 30-22, 30-23, 30-15 in a Big 12 Conference match Wednesday night at the Coors Events Conference Center.
With the win, CU improves to 16-8, surpassing its win total from the 2002 season (15-15). The Buffs remain in fifth place in the Big 12 at 8-6, just one win shy of their 2002 league win total (9-11). Baylor falls to 11-16, 3-11 in conference play.
Carr had match-highs with 14 kills and 11 digs. She ranks second in the Big 12 this season in double-doubles, picking up her 13th of the season on Wednesday. Freshman outside hitter Amber Nu'u was right behind Carr in digs with 10, and just missed a double-double of her own with nine kills.
Seven Buffs had at least five digs, resulting in Baylor's low hitting percentage. The Bears had just 32 kills on the evening on 114 attacks with 27 errors. The Buffs also blocked will for the fourth straight match. CU, which ranked ninth in the Big 12 in blocking entering the match, has averaged 2.7 blocks per game over the last four outings.
“It was a pretty good performance,” CU head coach Pi'I Aiu said. “We passed well, blocked well and attacked pretty well, so it was a pretty solid game for us. We needed this win and we need a few more if we want to get looked at for the tournament. Every match at this point is crucial.”
CU's hitting wasn't great in game one, netting just a .167 (16k-9e-42att), but the Buffs held Baylor to a .000 mark (9k-9e-39att) pulling away at the end 30-23.
Senior Monique Gerlach had 11 kills, five digs and three blocks. Sophomore Allie Griffin had nine kills, two digs and three blocks. Freshman Ashley Nu'u had 21 assists and five digs.
