VOLLEYBALL DOWNS UCF IN THREE

September 05, 2003 | Volleyball

DENVER ? Defense and timely blocking played on center stage as Colorado swept Central Florida, 30-22, 30-26, 30-23 in the first match of the Denver Invitational at Hamilton Gymansium, Friday.

CU improves to 4-1, winning its third straight match. UCF,C which opened its season earlier today against Denver, drops to 0-2.

The offensive numbers weren't quite there Friday as only one Buffalo, sophomore Nicole Carr, registered double-digits in kills (12). CU hit just, .214 (45 kills-21 errors-112attacks), well below its average of .262 posted in its first four matches.

Freshman Austin Zimmerman led a Buffs defense that held UCF to a .124 hitting percentage (44k-28e-129att). Zimmerman had 11 of CU's 48 digs to go along with six kills and two blocks.

'We we're more aggressive in the back row tonight,' Zimmerman said. 'In Maine it seemed that we held back at times, but tonight we were really ?balls to the walls,' getting to and under everything.'

Senior Monique Gerlach, CU's all-time hitting percentage leader (.333) had an off-night offensively, but picked it up on defense with a team-high five blocks in addition to eight digs. The Buffs had nine team blocks, five of which came in the final game.

The Buffs will play a double header at Hamilton Gymnasium tomorrow as DU Invitational action continues. CU will face Illinois State at 10 a.m. followed by a match up with the host Pioneers at 7:30 p.m.
