No. 41 Women's Tennis 1-1 on Oregon Trip

February 19, 2006 | Tennis

PORTLAND, Ore.  - The University of Colorado women's tennis team went 1-1 on their trip to the state of Oregon defeating Portland, 7-0 on Sunday, and falling to No. 23 Oregon, 4-3 on Saturday.

The Buffaloes (6-3) dominated winless Portland (0-7) winning all the six singles slots with five of them in straight sets, in addition to taking the doubles point winning two of three slots. CU is a perfect 4-0 against the Pilots in the head-to-head series.

On Saturday, the match was a little closer as the Buffs only managed three singles wins against the nationally ranked Ducks (6-0). Oregon has now defeated CU in consecutive years with only its second win against CU in 10 attempts.

Against Portland, CU's No. 1 doubles team of Monica Milewski and Jessica Vanderdys won for the third time as a team taking an easy 8-2 winner that subsequently won the doubles point coupled with the Buffs win at No. 3. Franziska Jendrian and Veera Nurmi teamed up for their sixth win in eight attempts this season with an 8-2 decision.

In singles, Vanderdys, Milewski, Nurmi, Gleisy Torres Torres and Martina Sedivec all won in straight sets. Eva Losinski rounded out the scoring winning her match in three sets after rallying from a set down to win 6-2, 6-0.

Vanderdys, ranked No. 39 nationally won a pair of matches this weekend along with Nurmi, who is No. 84 nationally.

Milewski (No. 56), Losinski, and Torres Torres each split their matches over the weekend, while Jendrian and Sedivec each won once.

Colorado, ranked No. 41 nationally returns home this weekend and returns to Big 12 Conference play taking on Texas Tech (Feb. 25) and Kansas State (March 4). The Red Raiders match begins at 9 a.m. at the Harvest House; the Wildcats match will take place at the Ranch Country Club in Westminster beginning at 4 p.m.
