Colorado-Kansas State Notes

October 13, 2007 | Football

TIME, TV SET FOR NEXT WEEK ABC/ESPN made its television selections tonight, and ESPN will televise the Kansas at Colorado game next Saturday (Oct. 20), with kickoff set for 3:45 p.m. mountain.

Quickly CU came in scoring in seven consecutive quarters, extending that to 10 before being shutout in the fourth quarter... For the second straight game, TB Hugh Charles and CB Terrence Wheatley were game captains, joining ILB Jordon Dizon and OT Tyler Polumbus, as they subbed for ILB R.J. Brown (concussion) and QB Bernard Jackson (academics)... FB Jake Behrens gained 23 yards on a rush to open the game; it was his first career touch... PK Tyler Cope made his sixth solo tackle on kickoff coverage in the first half, the most by any CU kicker in recent memory... QB Cody Hawkins extended a pair of school records, as he threw a touchdown pass in his seventh straight game from his career on-set, and well as an interception for the seventh straight game. The record for the most consecutive games with a touchdown pass at any time in a career is nine (Koy Detmer, the first nine games of the '96 season)... PK Kevin Eberhart has now made seven straight field goals, as he closed with five in a row at Baylor and was 2-for-2 tonight, including the second longest of his career (50 yards)... Prior to tonight, the last time CU had a punt blocked was in the Arizona State game last year; the last time an opponent scored a touchdown on a blocked punt return was in the 2005 Big 12 Championship game, when Brandon Foster recovered the ball in the end zone for a score... This was the seventh time in the 12 year history of the league CU is playing back-to-back league games away from home, and CU still has never has never swept the pair, going 0-3-4 (losing both twice with five splits)... Colorado still owns the best intradivision record in the North since the start of the '01 season at 21-10, with a 9-7 road mark; K-State is third (19-13, with Nebraska in-between at 20-12)... The 47-20 loss (27 points) is the largest margin of defeat in Dan Hawkins' 19 games at Colorado, and the first time an opponent scored 40 or more points... Colorado has allowed over 400 yards to the opponent in back-to-back games for the first time since the end of the '05 season (Nebraska, Texas in the Big 12 title game)... WR Scotty McKnight caught six passes tonight, the most since a similar number in game three and one more than he had the previous three games combined; he leads CU with 31 for the season,

O-LINE FIRST True freshman OT Ryan Miller made his first career start tonight... and there's a little more significance to it than your normal freshman doing so: it's the first time a true frosh has ever started at offensive tackle in CU history. He is the ninth true freshman to start on the offensive line since 1973 when frosh became eligible to play once again, joining teammate OG Kai Maiava, who became the eighth when he started the Oklahoma game on Sept. 29. With both starting tonight, they become just the fourth pair of true freshmen in school history to start at the same position in the same game, the second instance this year; here were the other three occasions (the first time of which also happened here in Manhattan):

Nov. 21, 1987 vs. Kansas State at Manhattan (CU 41, KSU 0)

Kanavis McGhee and Alfred Williams, both recruits out of Houston, are bookend outside linebackers for the first of many times in their CU careers.

Sept. 21, 1991 vs. Minnesota in Boulder (CU 58, Minnesota 0)

Clint Moore and Dolyn Jackson are the starting offensive guards in the third game of the season; the pair also started the following week at Stanford.

Sept. 29, 2007 vs. Oklahoma in Boulder (CU 27, Oklahoma 24)

Kendrick Celestine and Josh Smith are two of the players who started in a four-receiver set that opened the game for the Buffs.

FIRSTS First career starts tonight were made by FB Jake Behrens, TB Brian Lockridge and OT Ryan Miller... Behrens had his first rush and reception of his career in the first half, and obviously his first career touchdown.

229 & COUNTING Colorado scored in its 229th consecutive game, adding to the fifth longest active streak in the nation and the 11th longest of all-time; CU has now also scored in 144 straight league games (all 94 in Big 12 Conference play including four title games), and has scored in 90 consecutive road games (117 including neutral sites). It was the 160th time in the streak it was extended in the first quarter. The Buffs are closing in on the top 10 streaks of all-time, as Florida State (232, 1988-2006) and Nebraska (233, 1971-1991) are just ahead.

TB HUGH CHARLES (22-171, 0 TD) CU's senior tailback had the ninth 100-yard rushing game of his career, his fourth in a row (the most since TB Chris Brown had eight consecutive games reaching the century mark in 2002). It was a career-high for Charles, as his best previous game of 132 yards came against Oklahoma State in Stillwater in 2005. He now has 2,192 career rushing yards, as he vaulted from 15th to 12th all-time at Colorado; tonight he passed J.J. Flannigan (2,096); Merwin Hodel (2,102) and Kayo Lam (2,140). Cortlen Johnson (11th, 2,199) and Lamont Warren (10th, 2,242) are between him and the top 10 all-time at CU. He now has 523 yards this season.

CB TERRENCE WHEATLEY (6-128 KICKOFF RETURNS) The senior cornerback became just the fifth player in CU history to record 1,000 kickoff return yards, as he had 128 tonight to give him 1,065 for his career.

ILB JORDON DIZON (11 TACKLES) The senior linebacker moved into the top five all-time at Colorado, as he finished the game with 11 to increase his career count to 375 (unofficial; CU uses coaches video for its official numbers). He passed Chad Brown (369, 1989-92) and Laval Short (372, 1976-79) to move from seventh into fifth; the four ahead of him all have over 400.

WR JOSH SMITH (2-70, 0 TD RECEIVING) The true freshman wide receiver now has 11 catches for 290 yards on the season, averaging 26.4 per reception. Six of those have gone for 20 or more yards (five 30-plus: 65, 40, 38, 38 and 30).
