COLORADO SPRINGS - The University of Colorado women's tennis team opened the 2009 spring season with a 5-2 victory over the United States Air Force Academy Falcons, Tuesday night at the Cadet Gymnasium.

Colorado, ranked 57th nationally has won all 10 meetings against the Falcons in the series and now has defeated Air Force in the last five spring openers.

"It was a solid effort from the team for our first match of the season," said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. I'm proud the way they responded to tight points throughout and we're looking forward to playing a very good LSU team on Saturday."

Senior Monica Milewski defended her No. 110 national ranking defeating Christine Abayan 6-3, 6-3 at the top singles spot, and at No. 2 singles, junior Melisa Esposito swept Allie Chermel 6-1, 6-2.

Junior Camila Belassi edged Christen Monreal 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (8) at the No. 3 slot, while at No. 4, Franziska Jendrian came out victorious against Tahlia Smoke, taking a 6-3, 6-2 victory. It was Jendrian's 75th career singles triumph moving her into a tie for ninth on the all-time CU singles list.

Milewski has now won 65 singles victories and enters the spring season No. 20 all-time. Esposito recorded her 52nd singles victory and Belassi scored her 44th singles victory.

The Falcons answered by taking the No. 5 and 6 singles spots as Sarah Cassman defeated freshman Ania Anuszkiewicz, 6-3, 6-3. USAFA's Katrina Eromin rounded out the No. 6 spot with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over sophomore Abbie Probert.

The Buffs swept all three doubles positions. The team of Milewski and Belassi bested Abayan and Erlyn Rudico, 8-3 for their 10th win of the year (9-2 in the fall season). Milewski and Belassi are ranked No.12 among top-15 Central Region duos.

Jendrian and Esposito won their ninth match of the season defeating Smoke/Chermel 8-4; and Probert and Anuszkiewicz defeated Monreal/Cassman, 9-8. It was the first collegiate win for Anuszkiewicz, who is an incoming freshman at CU.
