Sooners Defeat Buffs 2-1 in Overtime
October 17, 2010 | Soccer
NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team lost in overtime 2-1 to the University of Oklahoma at the John Crain Field Sunday afternoon.
Colorado (6-9-1) suffered its fifth loss in Big 12 Conference competition giving them a 2-5-1 mark as Oklahoma (9-5-2) improved to 4-2-1 in league play.
Kate Russell scored the only goal of the first 45 minutes early at 2:44. Amy Barczuk sent a beautiful cross to the far post where Russell connected with it on a header and buried it into an open net. This was Russell's third goal of the season and Barczuk's first career assist.
Despite being outshot 6-3, the Buffaloes managed to lead 1-0 after the first half with CU goalkeeper Annie Brunner making two saves.
"Annie (Brunner) was brilliant," said head coach Bill Hempen. "She had some great saves that they didn't score which helped a lot."
On its 13th shot of the game, Oklahoma scored the equalizer to tie it at 1-1 in the 67th minute. Dria Hampton scored the goal for the Sooners from 18 yards out sending the ball over Brunner's head for her fourth this season.
Less than a minute into CU's sixth overtime match of the season, Whitney Palmer netted the golden goal for the Sooners ending the game at 2-1 and giving the Buffaloes their second extra period loss of the season. Annalisa Hall served a corner kick to Palmer who sent it into a wide open net.
"They were winning all the knock-down stuff. And we were turning the ball over on various areas of the field," said Hempen. "They are very direct and committed to going forward. They made some great runs through our back line and were just really good today."
The Sooners outshot the Buffaloes 19-7 throughout the 91 minutes of play.
"Oklahoma clearly, as cliche as it sounds, wanted to win more than the game," said Hempen. "They wanted to win each individual challenge and they did. They certainly deserved to win.
"We have to regroup and see what we can put together to play one game each weekend in the next two weeks left in the season, and we're excited to play at home a couple more times."
The Buffaloes return home to take on the University of Kansas at Prentup Field on Monday, Oct. 25 at 2:30 p.m.
