Colorado-Iowa State Notes
January 15, 2011 | Women's Basketball
The Buffs picked up their first win against a ranked opponent since beating No. 15/15 Kansas State 73-68 on Feb. 23, 2008. Prior to tonight's victory, the Buffaloes held a 24-game losing streak against ranked teams and a 21-game skid against teams ranked in both AP and WBCA Coaches polls.
The last time the Buffaloes beat a ranked ISU team was on Jan. 23, 2002, in an 86-73 win at home. At that time, Colorado was ranked 20/19 as ISU secured a 14/10 position in the polls. Today marks the first time in history that a non-ranked Colorado team has beaten a ranked ISU squad.
Colorado picked up its 10th win this season at the Coors Events Center, which marks the 22nd season out of 32 that the Buffaloes have managed such task.
Tonight's win is the Buffs first Big 12 Conference win this season and first under head coach Linda Lappe.
Colorado improved to 7-3 at home and 19-20 all-time in overtime contests after winning the third straight match played past regulation.
The Buffs managed to outrebound ISU 45-39. So far this season, the Cyclones have only given up an average of 31 rebounds per game.
The Buffaloes are 10-0 after leading at halftime.
CU held ISU to a 22.6 first-half shooting percentage, which is the second lowest first half performance by an opponent this season. Texas State shot 16.7% in the first 20 minutes against the Buffs on Dec. 1.
Brittany Spears logged her 109th career start today, leaving her just three behind Amy Mathern (1989-93) for the longest streak in team history. Her 18 points tonight gives her 1,813 career points making her just the fourth Buff to record 1,800 career points. She is now 45 points behind Tera Bjorklund who sits in third place on CU's all-time list.
Spears' 297 career free throws made puts her in 12th on CU's all-time chart bypassing head coach Linda Lappe who previously was in 12th with 296. Her 18 points and 12 rebounds give her the 28th double-double of her career and sixth this season. Her 12 rebounds ties her season high. She also logged five steals, a career high that she's recorded six times.
Chelsea Dale logged her first career start. She led the team with four assists setting her career high in that category.
