Buffs Fall To Cornhuskers 79-67

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Sophomore guard Alec Burks led the Buffaloes with 22 points, but Colorado dropped its first Big 12 Conference game to Nebraska 79-67 at the Devaney Center Tuesday night.
"It's frustrating because I thought this was a winnable game," head coach Tad Boyle said. "I like the way our guys battled, but we didn't play well tonight."
Toney McCray matched his career high with 18 points as the Cornhuskers ended CU's seven-game winning streak.
Jorge Brian Diaz had 14 points on 7-for-8 shooting and Lance Jeter and Drake Beranek added 10 apiece for the Cornhuskers (14-4, 2-2).
Despite Burks game-high point total, he committed seven turnovers, and Levi Knutson had 17 points for Colorado (14-5, 3-1). The Buffaloes, who were off to their best Big 12 start since 1996-97, were held 17 points under their season-scoring average.
"We turned it over 16 times," Boyle said. "A lot of those were a result of maybe some over penetration, but obviously when you're used to shooting 29 free throws and you only get nine, some frustrations occur and some were there tonight. We didn't handle them well. We have to learn from that and get better as well."
Nebraska led 31-30 at half and used a 13-2 run early in the second half to break the game open. Colorado committed seven of its 16 turnovers in the first nine minutes after halftime.
Jeter added nine assists and six rebounds for the Huskers.
The Buffs will continue league play on the road as they take on Oklahoma Saturday, January 22. The game will be televised on the Big 12 Network with action starting at 11:30 MDT.
