BOULDER - Sophomore guard Jalin Holland overcame early foul trouble to put together a career-high scoring performance in Colorado's 94-59 season-opening win on Monday night.
Holland, one of five returning players for the Buffaloes this season, was substituted out just 1:48 into Monday night's game after picking up two early fouls.
"Foul trouble is not new to him, from last year, from our scrimmages that we had this year," Head Coach Tad Boyle said. "He's a good defender. He needs to understand how to be physical defensively without fouling, and a lot of it is hand discipline, getting your arms out and showing your hands to the refs."
Holland showed growth and maturity in how he responded to the two quick fouls. He finished 8 of 12 from the field with a career-high 18 points, which led all scorers on the night. It was also the sophomore's fourth career double-figure scoring game. He played a key role in Colorado's explosive second half, knocking down two three-pointers, which contributed to a 58-25 second half showing from the Buffs'. Holland also grabbed six rebounds, a team high on the night.
"Getting my shot better, having a better percentage, being more confident in it and just having a bigger role offensively, so those shots come to me easier," Holland said after the game about his offensive performance.
His response to the early fouls was particularly encouraging for the coaching staff, which noticed a difference in Holland's approach compared to last season.
"It's funny, Coach (Bill) Grier mentioned it after the game in the locker room. He really commended Jalin, and the difference between maybe Jalin Holland last year and Jalin Holland this year was, last year those two fouls would have maybe mentally had him kind of checked out," Boyle said. "He came in and didn't pick up that third foul, fortunately. Then you're free to play in the second half a little bit more aggressively, which he did."
