Colorado-Long Beach State Notes

December 30, 2014 | Women's Basketball

Colorado finishes the nonconference schedule at 7-4. The Buffaloes are 48-9 in regular season nonconference games under Linda Lappe (since 2010-11) and have won 41 of their last 46.

Long Beach State takes over the series lead at 3-2 and snaps a two-game Colorado win streak.

Colorado drops to 31-9 in the game which follows the extended holiday suffering its first loss since an 87-73 setback at Stanford on Dec. 28, 1997 (snaps a 16-game win streak in the game after the holidays).

Colorado wore their alternate gold jerseys for the first time this year.

BRRRR – The temperature outside for tonight's 7:05 p.m. tip was a chilly minus-6 degrees Fahrenheit (of course it was a comfortable 70 degrees inside!). The teams felt the chill early on Long Beach State missed its first eight shots while Colorado was 2-of-10.

Zoe Beard-Fails scored 8 of Colorado's first 15 points she was 4-of-6 during that span (.667) while the rest of the team was just 3-of-14 (.214). Jamee Swan and Beard-Fails combined for 14 of CU's first 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting (.700) while rest of team was 2-of-13 (.154). Colorado heated up a bit to end the half at 41 percent overall (12-of-29).

Colorado had 14 turnovers in the first half (6 for LBSU). The 49ers took advantage with a 13-6 edge in points off turnovers…a late 6-0 run gave LBSU a 24-19 lead (at the 3:20 mark) During that run Colorado had 6 turnovers and was scoreless over 3:48 until Alina Hartmann hit a 3-pointer which ended the drought and cut the 49ers lead to 24-22.

Colorado trailed at the half (28-26) for the sixth time in 11 games and fell to 3-3 in those outings. The combined 54 points at half was the second lowest for a Colorado game this year (51, 26-25 Colorado State led Colorado on Nov. 29). Colorado's point total and field goal percentage (.375) were lows at home this season and second lowest overall (at Missouri, 50 points, .333 fg %).

Colorado was just 1-of-9 to open the second half. LBSU opened the half on a 15-4 run, including a 12-0 spurt that gave them a 43-30 lead at the 13:50 mark. The 49ers were 6-of-9 from the field during that run. After LBSU led 45-32 with 12:54 left, Colorado went on a 14-2 run over the next 7:48 to cut the lead to 48-46 before the 49ers scored four straight and held that six-point advantage through the end of the game.

Colorado dominated on the boards 50-26, the plus-24 margin by far the highest of the season (plus-17 vs. Missouri State and Iowa) and largest since holding a plus-25 margin against Arizona (51-26) on Jan. 20, 2013. The Buffaloes hit 50 rebounds for the fifth time this season, which have all occurred in the last seven games. The Buffaloes have led or been even with their opponents in rebounding in 10 of 11 games.

Colorado's 25 turnovers were a season high (24 vs. Western Kentucky) and most since registering a similar number against Louisville on Dec. 14, 2012. The 49ers enjoyed a 22-8 edge in points off turnovers.

Zoe Beard-Fails registered career highs in points (14) rebounds (8) and field goals made and attempted (7-of-13). She has started the last two games averaging 11 points and 7.5 rebounds. Over the last four she is averaging 9 points and 5.8 rebounds.

Jamee Swan had career-highs with 15 rebounds and 5 blocks to go along with 15 points. She recorded her second double-double of the season and fourth of her career. Her 86 career blocks are 10th on CU's all-time list.

Lauren Huggins had eight 3-point attempts (missed all eight) as she moved into 20th all-time with 161. She is currently 18th in career 3-pointers made with 60.

Jen Reese scored nine points, inching closer to 1,000. She will enter Pac-12 play with 945, needing 55 to become the 26th player in team history to reach 1,000.
