CU Soccer Falls 4-2 To No. 12 Cal In Pac-12 Opener
September 27, 2014 | Soccer
BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's soccer team fell to the No. 12 California Bears 4-2 in its first Pac-12 Conference match on Saturday afternoon at Prentup Field.
The No. 12 Bears took an early 1-0 lead in the 10th minute of the match behind a goal from Celeste Boureille, her first of the year. Boureille controlled the ball and sent a shot past a diving Kate Scheele to put Cal out in front. It was the first goal Colorado has allowed in the first half this season.
"You think we're ready and I guess we weren't ready," said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez. "We started okay I felt, the first goal is something we need to deal with from the defensive side and goalkeeping side, but that shouldn't dictate the game. We just weren't good enough today."
About ten minutes later, the Bears extended their lead when Guro Bergsvand headed the ball inside the right post. The Bears' Taylor Comeau took the corner kick from the left side of the field and connected with Bergsvand to give Cal a 2-0 lead.
The Buffs had a chance shortly after at the 24:17 mark on a corner kick. Freshman Joss Orejel sent the ball into the goal box forcing the Bears' goalkeeper, Emily Boyd to run out and knock the ball away. Orejel found herself with the ball again after the save and took a shot outside the top of the 18, but went right into Boyd's hands.
California would add another goal in the 35th minute to go up 3-0 and for the first time this season, Colorado trailed at halftime.
"There just wasn't enough urgency at the beginning of the game," Sanchez said. "When you fall behind a team like that there's not a lot of chances to get it back."
After the break, California's Karly Graf made it 4-0 at the 64:31 mark.
The Buffs gave themselves a fighting chance in the second half behind goals from sophomore Brie Hooks and senior Tori Cooper.
Hooks put CU on the board in the 67th minute when she scored her fourth goal of the year. Hooks controlled a loose ball and made a move around a Cal defender then took a shot from the right side, just on the inside edge of the goal box. The ball found the top left corner and made it 4-1.
Cooper cut the lead in half when she recorded the Buffs' second goal four minutes later. Orejel booted CU's corner kick into a crowded Cal goal box. Cooper was the first to touch the ball and headed it into the right side of the net, making it 4-2. Cooper's goal was her second of the season and second of her Colorado career.
Despite the Buffs outshooting the Bears 18-13, unfortunately they could not get anything more to fall. Colorado dropped to 7-3 (0-1 Pac 12) and Cal improved to 9-1 (1-0 Pac 12) overall.
The Buffaloes head west to begin a stretch of five straight road matches. The trip begins in Los Angeles with CU battling No. 21 USC on Friday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m.
"Sometimes it's okay to be on the road," said Sanchez. "Maybe it's good to get on the road and refocus. I think we have to go back to the mindset that we are the underdogs and have a little bit of a chip on our shoulder. We have to regroup tomorrow and it doesn't get any easier at USC and UCLA next weekend."
