Colorado Shuts Out Army In Sunday Match

August 16, 2026 | Soccer

BOULDER – The Colorado Buffaloes soccer team secured a commanding 6-0 win over Army West Point on Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field. They advance to 2-0-0 on the season. This is the second of Colorado's three-game home stint, with Cal State Fullerton next on the docket for the Black and Gold.

The win marked Danny Sanchez's 200th career NCAA Division I win and Colorado's 100th win after leading at halftime.

"I just think at the end of the day, it's a reflection of the support we get as a program, and every year we're building the program, and we're excited," said Sanchez.

This match marked the first official meeting between the two programs. However, the two teams were not completely unfamiliar with each other, as Army head coach Tracy Chao previously served as an assistant coach at Colorado.

CU displayed a full team effort today with goals from Hope Leyba, Michaela McGowan with two, Reagan Kotschau and Sloane Phillips, who recorded her first collegiate goal.

"I am just thrilled to be here. I owe the credit to my teammates. They are the reason that I'm here, and I'm so blessed to be part of something so amazing," said McGowan on her performance today.

Colorado did not allow Army to take any shots, setting a record for fewest shots by an opponent in a match.

"You don't see that very often. We challenged them not to give up any goals and to not give up any shots. And this [Army] is a good team," said Sanchez.

The keeper battle continued at Sunday's match. Jamie Campbell started for the Buffaloes, Brooke Goerish started the second half and Madeline Mueller played the final 10 minutes. However, none of the keepers saw any shots in today's match.

"I thought everyone that played today did well. Players that came off the bench did well, and then as you guys know, we got a few players dinged up that will be in the mix. So it's a good problem to have," said Sanchez.

How It Happened

Army kicked off the sunny Salute to Service game with possession.

The Buffaloes came out firing, seeing three quick looks at the goal from Hope Leyba, Ruby Hayward and Caley Swierenga in the first five minutes.

The early offensive pressure paid off for the Buffaloes as Hope Leyba scored a header to the top left of the net in the seventh minute, assisted by Reagan Kotschau. The goal marked her first of the season. With the goal, she took sole possession of fourth place for all-time career goals at Colorado with 33.

The Black and Gold continued to generate looks at the goal, Michaela McGowan scored her first goal as a Buffalo in the 18th minute, assisted by Ruby Hayward.

Colorado continued to fire on all cylinders with back-to-back goals in the 28th minute. An Olympic goal from Reagan Kotschau and an unassisted goal from McGowan, her second of the game. The two goals were 22 seconds apart, making it the second-fastest consecutive goals in CU history.

The Buffaloes did not allow Army any shots or shots on goal in the first half.

Sloane Phillips got the scoring going early in the second half with an unassisted goal to the bottom left of the goal in the 48th minute.

Colorado took 13 shots on goal for the rest of the game and connected on a final Olympic goal from Sienna McAthy in the 89th minute to close out the 6-0 win.

UP NEXT: The Colorado Buffaloes soccer team will look to extend its winning streak against Cal State Fullerton on Aug. 20 at 7 pm, continuing its home play at Prentup Field.
