Buffs Call On Montez-Fields Combo To Overtake, Bury Beavers, 47-6

October 01, 2016 | Football, B.G. Brooks

BOULDER – With Steven Montez throwing and Shay Fields catching, the Colorado Buffaloes scored 20 unanswered first-half points and zipped past Oregon State 47-6 on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Folsom Field.

Montez and Fields hooked up for three first-half touchdowns, enabling Fields to tie the school record for TD receptions in a game (three) with three other players and the Buffs to remain unbeaten (2-0) in the Pac-12 Conference (4-1 overall).

Montez, a redshirt freshman making his second college start at quarterback in place of injured senior Sefo Liufau (ankle), followed up last weekend's debut at Oregon with another solid afternoon. He accounted for 321 yards in total offense (293 passing, 28 rushing in three quarters against the Beavers (0-1, 1-3).

The Buffs have now won consecutive conference games for the first time since 2010, when they defeated Big 12 foes Iowa State and Kansas State under interim head coach Brian Cabral.

HOW IT HAPPENED: For the first time this season, the Buffs started relatively slow – if not scoring on their first possession counts as a slow start. And they also fell behind in the first quarter – 3-0 on a 32-yard Garrett Owens field goal – for the first time in 2016.

But CU made amends. Quickly.

The Montez-Fields TD Matinee was about to begin. They connected for scores on the next three CU possessions – the first a 51-yarder that found Fields at least five steps behind the Beavers secondary, the second a 33-yarder that saw Fields equally uncovered.

That TD throw – Montez's first completion of the game – was set up by six consecutive Kyle Evans runs – and later in the second quarter Evans would show his receiving skills.

The Buffs first two scoring drives required a total of 5:26, and a 3-0 CU deficit suddenly turned to a 13-3 advantage. It was about to grow.

After CU's defensive end Jimmie Gilbert forced a fumble by OSU QB Darrel Garretson and a subsequent 20-yard loss on the Beavers' first possession of the second quarter, the Buffs took over on their own 13-yard line.

Five plays into that drive, Montez hit Fields with a short pass near the right sideline. It would have been a nice gain with any YAC (yards after catch). But those yards were special.

The fleet Fields made the reception then steadily pulled away from three Beavers defenders, racing 63 yards to the end zone. "He got loose on a five-yard route," said Montez. "Easy throw for me and he just turned it into a highlight reel play."

Freshman Davis Price – called on after Chris Graham's initial PAT was blocked – kicked the Buffs ahead 20-3 with 11:32 left before halftime.

Owens got the Beavers another three points with a 40-yard field goal (20-6), but the Buffs wasted no time answering. After a 33-yard kickoff return by freshman Tony Julmisse, CU marched 66 yards in 11 plays, capping the drive with a 1/2-yard walk-in TD by Phillip Lindsay on fourth down.

The march's big play was a 20-yard pass from Montez to Evans, slipped out of the backfield and turned back into the bright sunlight to make the catch and give the Buffs first-and-goal at the Beavers' 3-yard line.

Price's PAT pushed CU ahead 27-6 with just under 5 minutes left before halftime. The Beavers were slowly, efficiently being buried, and for good measure the Buffs positioned Price for a 54-yard field goal with 50 seconds left in the half.

The freshman from Evergreen's kick was low but true, long enough to be the longest by a freshman kicker in CU history. Price celebrated with teammates as he left the field and again on the sidelines – but he didn't stay there long.

Nine seconds later – on Oregon State's first play from scrimmage after Price's record kick – Beavers QB Conor Blount was pressured by end Samson Kafovalu but got off a pass that was deflected by linebacker Kenneth Olugbode.

The ball caromed neatly into the arms of linebacker Rick Gamboa, who returned it 20 yards for a TD. Price put his sideline party on hold, returned to the field and kicked the Buffs ahead 37-6 with 41 seconds remaining in the half.

The Buffs' halftime numbers were staggering – 363 yards in total offense, with Montez completing 12-of-18 passes for 252 yards and three TDs. Fields' five receptions netted 160 yards and all three scores, while the CU run game produced 111 yards on 26 rushes.

Defensively, the Buffs held the Beavers to 144 first-half yards (88 rushing, 56 passing) and 10 first downs.

After a Tedric Thompson interception midway through the third quarter, Price added his second field of the afternoon – a 22-yarder that increased CU's lead to 40-3 with 4:38 left in the quarter.

Montez and most of CU's front-liners went to the bench on the Buffs' final third-quarter possession. Senior Jordan Gehrke replaced Montez, with junior tailback Michael Adkins II getting much of the ground game work.

He scored on a 1-yard run with 10:18 to play, finishing a 15-play, 84-yard Gehrke-led march. Davis' PAT made it 47-6 – and how's this for a turnaround: some spectators were heading for the exits with the Buffs on the right end of a blowout.

TURNING POINT: Settling himself after throwing three incompletions on CU's first possessions, Montez and Fields took control in the passing game and accounted for three quick scores. The Beavers never recovered.

CU STANDOUTS: Montez – 19-of-27 passing, 293 yards, 3 TDs; Fields – 7 receptions, 169 yards, 3 TDs; Lindsay – 16 carries, 90 yards, 1 TD; Gilbert – 7 solo tackles, 2 QB sacks

KEY STATISTIC: After three consecutive incompletions in his Folsom Field debut, Montez handed off six straight times to Evans on CU's second possession, settling himself before unleashing his 51-yard TD pass to Fields.

THE PLATI'-TUDE STAT: CU was 14-of-31 on second-down conversions, meaning the Buffs were 31-of-62 against the Oregon schools (17-of-31 last week).

WHAT IT MEANS: For the second time this season – the first followed the season-opening win over CSU – the Buffs encored a significant victory by methodically taking care of business. Last week's win at Oregon could have brought an emotional (and physical) letdown against a team that CU was expected to ease past. That's exactly what the Buffs did Saturday; they were expected to dispatch the Beavers and they did. CU has fashioned a nice and now indisputable head of steam as it points toward USC next weekend.

NOTEWORTHY: The Buffs won Saturday's coin toss, making them 5-0 this season in that department . . . . Saturday's Family Weekend attendance was 46,839 . . . . The Buffs improved to 18-7 in Family Weekend contests . . . . CU went three and out – Montez threw three straight incompletions – on its opening possession, marking the first time this season the Buffs haven't scored the first time they had the ball . . . The Buffs have outscored five opponents 85-17 in first quarters this season. They led 13-3 Saturday after one period . . . . After Chris Graham's PAT kick was blocked following CU's first TD, freshman Davis Price handled the extra point duty after the Buffs' subsequent scores . . . . Oregon State lost junior left guard Fred Lauina, a 6-4, 307-pounder, on its second offensive possession to an apparent knee/leg injury. He was replaced by Gus Lavaka, a 6-4, 340-pound freshman . . . . Garrett Owens' 32-yard field goal at 8:15 of the first quarter gave the Beavers a 3-0 lead and the Buffs their only first-quarter deficit through five games . . . . There's nothing like coming home; the Buffs' last two games in September took them a combined 4,176 miles (Ann Arbor, Mich.; Eugene, Ore.). For Saturday's game, they traveled a meager 20 miles from team headquarters in Broomfield to Folsom Field . . . . OSU QB Darrel Garretson is the son of the longtime NBA official of the same name.

QUOTEWORTHY: "That dude should be the coach here for a long, long time. Better strap him up to a big ol' contract, because he's a damn good football coach." – Oregon State coach Gary Andersen

"In my opinion, these are the best corners we've played by far . . . they have three corners that are special young men, and they may go even deeper than that after I sit back and watch the film." – Andersen

"It's awesome. I just give him a decent ball and he goes out and makes amazing plays. All of our receivers do."Montez on the chemistry between him and Fields

"We started off a little slow but once we got going it's really hard to stop the tempo – especially at altitude." – Fields on CU's penchant for fast starts

"We've got to keep playing games. Every team that's left to play can beat us, and we can beat every team left. We have to come and play Colorado football; that's what I tell them all the time." – MacIntyre on the Buffs getting over the hump

"Today was by far my best game. I was able to do things that for the past three years I wasn't able to do." – OLB Jimmie Gilbert

NEXT UP: The Buffs travel to Los Angeles to play Southern California next Saturday at 2 p.m. MDT (Pac-12 Network).
