Buffs Look To Get Fourth Straight Win On Sunday

February 17, 2017 | Tennis

BOULDER – Fresh off their exciting comeback at Air Force, this past week, Colorado's women's tennis (7-1) team looks to get its fourth straight win on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT, as the Buffs welcome to town the University of Texas at El Paso Miners (2-6).

CU is riding high after their well-earned Wednesday night win at Air Force 4-3.  The Buffs had dropped the doubles point, but strong play from top to bottom in singles, and a huge clinching point coming at No. 5 by junior Kyra Wojcik (6-6 overall) gave the Buffs their third straight win and a big-time comeback on the road.

CU senior Nuria Ormeño Ruiz has lead the way for the Buffs, anchoring the top spot in singles with an impressive 7-1 record at No. 1 (16-5 overall).  Not to be outdone by her teammate, junior transfer Louise Ronaldson has been just as solid putting together an imposing record of 5-1 (14-3 overall) slotted at No. 2.

At the heart of the Buff lineup, freshman Chloe Hule and sophomore Annabelle Andrinopoulos have played key parts to the Buffs early success.

Hule's 10-7 overall record is notable since it's her first season at the collegiate level, and she's contributed every week so far to CU's torrid start to the season.  Andrinopoulos has really settled in at the No. 4 position in the lineup, boasting a 3-0 record there while putting together a solid record of 10-6 overall.

All-time Colorado is 6-1 against UTEP, having beaten the Miners in Albuquerque, New Mexico, last season 5-2.  This will be the second time the Miners have ever made the trip to Boulder, the last being on February 21, 1998, which was a 6-3 victory for the Buffs.

UTEP will play two matches in Laramie, Wyoming, before Sunday's visit to Boulder.  First, on Friday the Miners will play Nebraska-Kearney.  Then on Saturday they'll play Wyoming before making the quick trip south to Boulder.

The match is scheduled to be played outside, weather permitting, at the South Campus Tennis Courts.  Any changes to the venue or time will be announced on twitter via @CUBuffsTennis.

MOVING UP THE ALL-TIME LIST: With her victory on Wednesday night Ruiz continued her assault on CU's record books by moving into the top ten of CU's all-time singles wins list.  She did that by getting her 77th career win to gain sole possession of tenth on the list.

Ruiz's win improved her career record to 77-41 and the all-time singles wins list wasn't the only list that she moved up on.  With her 15th career win at the No. 1 position Ruiz also moved into a three-way tie for ninth place on CU's all-time No.1 singles wins list.
