BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team extended its winning streak to four to start the season after a convincing, 7-0, win Saturday over the Sacramento State Hornets at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center in Boulder.
It was just the third meeting between the two teams with the most recent being in 2010. CU improved to 4-0, while the Hornets now have a record of 1-4, 1-0 in Big Sky play.
"We are getting better every match, and we are making adjustments on the things we have been practicing," said head coach Nicole Kenneally. "It is a really good sign to start to put those things we have been working on into play. Sacramento State definitely gave us a run at the end of a lot of matches, but we held strong which is a good thing to see at this point of the season."
The Buffaloes took the doubles point with wins by the pairings of junior Brigitte Beck and sophomore Chloe Hule as well as freshman Linda Huang and senior Kyra Wojcik. Huang and Wojcik breezed to a 6-0, win over Sacramento State's Sofi Wicker and Sofia Gulnova, while Beck and Hule clinched the doubles point by defeating the Hornets' Maria Gonzalez and Jenna Dorian, 6-1.
In singles play, the Buffs won five of its six matchups in straight sets.
Hule made quick work of the Hornets' Wicker, winning 6-0, 6-2; senior Louise Ronaldson took down Sacramento State's Gonzalez, 6-1, 6-4; and Huang clinched the match with a hard fought 7-6, 6-4 win over Loaiza Esquivas.
"If you asked [Linda Huang] how she did she'd probably say that she didn't do her best, but the good players find a way to win, when they aren't playing their best," said Kenneally.
Beck, Hule and Wojcik remain undefeated in doubles play, while Huang and Wojcik remain undefeated in singles play this season.
Colorado will play the Boise State Broncos on Sunday, Feb. 11 at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center in Boulder with first serve set for 1 p.m.
