Beavers Top Buffs, 2-1

October 06, 2019 | Soccer

Colorado falls at home for the first time this season

BOULDER – The weekend ended on a sour note for the Colorado soccer team on Sunday. The Buffaloes were dealt their first home loss of the season, falling to Oregon State in a 2-1 decision.

No. 17 Colorado now falls to 9-2-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in Pac-12 play. The Beavers improved to 9-1-1 and 1-1-1 in the conference.

CU controlled much of the contest, leading all the offensive categories on the stat sheet. Oregon State landed the first blow of the match in the 29th minute, taking all the momentum the Buffs had built up.

Freshman Tessa Barton brought the Buffs back to even in the second half, registering her fourth goal of the season. OSU answered back minutes later to retake the one-goal advantage.

The Buffs continued to push as the clock wound down but were unable to extend the match and force overtime.

How it happened

The Buffs set a quick tempo early on against the Beavers. Sophomore Kayleigh Webb almost opened the scoring for the Buffs in the 4th minute. She hit a one-touch volley just over the crossbar from 12 yards out. The offense continued to fire for Colorado early in the match, recording the first six shots.

The near-misses became a frustrating theme for the Buffs. Senior Stephanie Zuniga put a shot just high of the crossbar in the 13th minute. Taylor Kornieck took a free kick in the 29th minute that also just missed its mark.

In the very next sequence, OSU's Brianna McReynolds put the Beavers on the board. She took a cross from Marley Salveter at the top of six and fit it between the right post and Tompkins.

Kornieck had a second attempt at a free kick in the 30th minute, following a handball called just outside the penalty area. Kornieck opted to chip the ball up over the Beavers' wall and forced a save by Bridgette Skiba.

Barton almost tied the game up towards the end of the first half. She powered a shot in on Skiba, who had it slip through her hands. The OSU goalkeeper was able to recover and corral the ball before crossing the goal line.

CU came close to evening the score in the 48th minute. Sophomore Chaynee Kingsbury got loose on a breakaway and pushed her right-footed shot just wide of the left post. Webb, Zuniga and Barton all offered up chances in the second half that saw Colorado fire off 11 more shots.

Barton finally was able to get the Buffs on the board in the 73rd minute. Gabbi Chapa served a ball to Kyla Ferry. Ferry knocked it out of the air and onto Barton in the middle of the box. Barton hit it in stride and past Skiba, momentarily tying the match.

The Beavers sucked the energy out of Prentup Field four minutes later when Toni Malone scored on a scramble following an OSU throw-in.

CU upped the urgency late in the contest, looking get the tying goal. A Kornieck header in the 77th minute was barely kept out of the net by a falling Skiba. Zuniga had the best chance in the final seconds, turning and firing a left-footer towards the upper right corner. Skiba slid across the goal line and stuck up her right arm, deflecting the ball just over the crossbar.

Key Statistic: The Buffs had plenty of chances, outshooting Oregon State 23-7 in the afternoon. Colorado had six shots on net compared to Oregon State's three.

Quotes
Head coach
Danny Sanchez
On what needs improving
"The games are only going to get tougher. The disappointing part is being at home and dropping points, where I think that maybe we got a lot more out of it. Once again, as I said on Thursday, Oregon State had two good chances. They had two good chances and scored on both of them. We had 23 shots and only six were on frame, so we're not being efficient enough. We're creating good opportunities and their keeper made some nice saves there at the end. We're 9-2-1 and we have to regroup and get ready for the California schools because it's only going to get harder."

On turning things around
"I think you have to keep things in perspective, and you have to stick to your principles. We need to stick to what we're good at. Usually, with the number of chances we had, you get three or four goals, and it just didn't happen for us today, but that's just soccer. We're not going to blow anything up or go overboard. The message was, 'hey, we have to get recovered and get ready for Tuesday.' It's a short work week, and we're on the road again on Thursday, so really we just have to stick to what we do and sharpen up."

On Colorado's chances late in the match
"I think once we went down a second goal with 30 minutes to go, a little bit of desperation kicked in and there are a little bit more numbers going forward. I think it just appears more urgent. But you must take more chances and I thought that we did a good job. We made some tactical adjustments and they worked; we just were a little impatient."
